Polarimetric passive remote sensing of ocean wind vectors

Radio Science, 1994
This paper investigates the theory of polarimetric passive remote sensing of wind‐generated sea surfaces and the potential application of polarimetric radiometry to ocean wind remote sensing. Theoretical polarimetric emission coefficients of small‐scale sea surfaces are evaluated using the small perturbation method (SPM).

Directional attributes of the ocean surface wind stress vector

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1993
In a recent paper by Geernaert (1988) it was suggested that the stress and wind vectors are rarely aligned and that the deviation of the stress vector direction from the wind vector is related to the surface heat flux. It was argued that since cold air advection over the open ocean generally corresponds to upward heat flux, the consequent rotation of ...

Measurement of oceanic wind vector using satellite microwave radiometers

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 1992
The possibility of retrieving both wind speed and direction from microwave radiometer measurements of the ocean is studied using Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) measurements collocated with buoy reports from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). A physically based algorithm is used to retrieve the wind speed.

Simulation of the performance of full-polarized scatterometer for ocean wind vector measurement

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
Spaceborne wind scatterometers has been proved to be an efficient instrument for measurements of ocean surface winds. There have been some experiments show that the polarimetric scatterometer can significantly improve the measurement accuracy compared to the traditional co-polarized scatterometers [1].

SeaWinds-a new spaceborne radar for measuring ocean wind vectors

Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96, 2002
SeaWinds is a new spaceborne Ku-band scatterometer that will provide accurate, continuous measurements of global ocean wind vectors. The instrument will fly on the Japanese Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS-II). SeaWinds is a pulsed 110 watt, 13.402 GHz radar with a conical scanned antenna providing an ocean swath of 1800 km.

An improved active/passive oceanic wind vector retrieval technique

2010 11th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment, 2010
This paper describes the advantages of combining passive and active microwave remote sensing observations for the purpose of ocean wind vectors retrievals. Previous studies have shown that a linear combination of horizontal and vertical polarized brightness temperatures contains a robust wind direction signal.

An algorithm for measurement of the ocean wind vector by a spaceborne scatterometer

2000 5th International Symposium on Antennas, Propagation, and EM Theory. ISAPE 2000 (IEEE Cat. No.00EX417), 2000
The principle of measurement of the wind vector over the ocean surface using a spaceborne multibeam scatterometer is considered. The possibility of narrowing the ranges of possible wind speeds and directions to find a unique solution is discussed. An algorithm for recovering the wind speed and direction is proposed.

Generation and validation of analysed wind vectors over the global oceans

Remote Sensing Letters, 2012
Daily and 12 hourly gridded analysed wind vectors (AWVs) over global ocean were generated using the simple spatial interpolation scheme of ‘box averaging’, with a horizontal resolution of 0.5° × 0.5°. For daily analysed winds, observations only from Oceansat-2 Scatterometer (OSCAT) were used. The 12 hourly AWVs were generated by combining the data from
