Mapping of the ocean wind by ocean acoustic interferometers.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2010Air-sea interaction is driven mainly by the wind blowing over the ocean surface, and its monitoring is an important task. Using ambient noise for the wind speed retrieval was suggested long ago; however, the proposed approaches rely usually on the local measurements with bottom-mounted hydrophones.

CYGNSS Observations of Ocean Winds and Waves
IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018The cyclone global navigation satellite system (CYGNSS), launched on December 15, 2016, represents the first dedicated GNSS-R satellite mission specifically designed to retrieve ocean surface wind speeds in the Tropical Cyclone (TC) environment [1]. CYGNSS uses a constellation of eight microsatellite observatories that can receive both the direct and ...

RADARSAT application in ocean wind measurements
2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011SAR can penetrate clouds and precipitation and can provide accurate observations of surface features such as fronts and localized coastal marine winds. Often atmosphere-ocean interaction processes evident in SAR imagery are not present from in situ observations, the operational network, weather prediction models, or scatterometer data, especially in ...

Effect of precipitation on ocean wind scatterometry
IEEE International IEEE International IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2004. IGARSS '04. Proceedings. 2004, 2004This paper presents preliminary results of precipitation effect on microwave scatterometry wind estimates at C and Ku band. The results show that microwave scatterometer underestimates the wind speed by up to 10 m/s for rain rate condition of 15 mm/hr and wind speed condition of 25 to 30 m/s for both frequency ...

Impact of ocean currents on scatterometer winds in the tropical Pacific Ocean
IEEE International IEEE International IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2004. IGARSS '04. Proceedings. 2004, 2004The SeaWinds scatterometer on QuikSCAT has been measuring wind vectors globally since mid-July, 1999. The scatterometer signal is generated by backscatter from centimeter-scale wind-generated waves. When the wind blows against (with) the surface currents, the scatterometer will measure higher (lower) winds than the absolute wind measured by an ...

On the Homogeneous Model of Wind-Driven Ocean Circulation
SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1999The paper contains a formal derivation of the quasigeostrophic equations on \(\beta\)-plane, and the derivation of the corresponding boundary layers, as is well known since \textit{J. Pedlosky} [Geophysical fluid dynamics. 2nd ed. (Study ed.). New York etc.: Springer-Verlag. XIV (1987; Zbl 0713.76005)].

On Wind‐Driven Currents in an Ocean with Bottom Friction
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1976AbstractThis paper presents an investigation of the long period response of an unbounded ß‐plane ocean with bottom friction to initial disturbances of wind stress applied at the surface. An analysis is carried out for determining the free and forced barotropic motions generated by stationary or traveling atmospheric winds.

No one has been willing to try to moor tens of thousands of floating, megawatt-scale windmills above the moderate depths of the continental shelf off the US Atlantic seaboard. The wind averages from 400 to 700 watts per square meter where on land in New England the wind averages only about 150 watts per square meter. William E.
