Wind and Ocean Power Generators
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2014We give an overview of wind and ocean power generation methods. Wind generation is now an established large global business while ocean generation is still in the prototype stage of development. The most important parameter for commercial acceptance of these technologies is the levelized cost of electricity produced by them.

Climate Change Two frequently asked questions about how climate warming will affect the environment are whether windiness might change and what effects that might have on ocean waves. Young and Ribal analyzed global satellite data over the period from 1985 to 2018 to determine if there are any trends in oceanic wind speed and wave height.

ON THE WIND-DRIVEN OCEAN CIRCULATION
Journal of Meteorology, 1950Abstract Streamlines of oceanic mass transport are derived from solutions to a vertically integrated vorticity equation which relates planetary vorticity, lateral stress curl, and the curl of the stress exerted by the winds on the sea surface. These solutions account for many of the gross features of the general ocean circulation, and some of its ...

Effects of Winds on Ocean Color
2006 IEEE International Symposium on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2006Previous studies suggested that winds would indirectly affect the remote sensing of ocean color. Moderately roughened sea enhances the probability of specular reflection of solar disk by randomly orientated wave facets. Whitecaps due to breaking waves increase the diffuse reflectance of sea surface and hence radiant energy received at a color sensor ...

The Wind-Driven Ocean Circulation
2000One important problem in physical oceanography is to understand the physics of the mean surface ocean circulation and the variability of this circulation on time scales from several months to several years. Focus in this chapter is on the North Atlantic ocean circulation, and in particular the Gulf Stream region, since for this region relatively many ...

On the wind driven ocean circulation
Deep Sea Research (1953), 1958Abstract A model of a wind driven ocean was considered to determine the vertical structure of the horizontal currents. The most restrictive assumptions were the absence of vertical motion and the constancy of the coefficient of exchange of momentum. The results of the model indicate a strong counter current under the intense western current.

Wind Gyres in Circumpolar Oceans
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1985Abstract The interaction between a close wind-gyre and a neighboring eastward current is investigated using a hierarchy of increasingly complex analytical models. The method used to determine the vertical structure is that proposed earlier by Rhines and Young.

The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind
2004This book was published in 2004. The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind describes in detail the two-way interaction between wind and ocean waves and shows how ocean waves affect weather forecasting on timescales of 5 to 90 days. Winds generate ocean waves, but at the same time airflow is modified due to the loss of energy and momentum to the waves ...

Understanding wind stress (drag) over the ocean is central to many facets of air-sea interaction, which in turn is vital for models of weather prediction and climate modelling. Wind Stress over the Ocean, first published in 2001, brings together thirty of the world's leading experts in air-sea interaction, under the auspices of the Scientific Committee
