Mapping Ecological Units in Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems of San Andrés Island (Southwestern Caribbean)

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
To map ecological units in mesophotic coral ecosystems on the western side of San Andrés Island (Colombia) considering biotic components and geomorphic zonation among 30–140 m deep, 27 video transects were done using an ROV.

Contrasting Reproductive and Early Life-History Strategies in Recently Diverged Octocoral Species (<i>Paramuricea</i> spp.). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The two color morphs of the Iberian–Atlantic Paramuricea complex show little genetic divergence, and their species boundaries have remained unclear. By analyzing gametogenesis, spawning timing, fertilization environment, and early life‐history traits, we reveal strong prezygotic barriers and divergent developmental and dispersal strategies between the ...

First evidence of live mesophotic coral reefs on the Benin continental shelf

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCE) remain poorly documented along the West African coastline, particularly on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Guinea.

Xenia umbellata (Octocorallia): A novel model organism for studying octocoral regeneration ability

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Climate change is leading to phase shifts in coral reefs worldwide. In many biogeographic regions, octocorals are now becoming the most abundant benthic components, due to their environmental resilience and ability to rapidly colonize reef surfaces ...

Evolutionary, Functional and Mechanistic Characterisation of Microbial Terpene Synthase‐Like Genes From Springtails

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
A genome analysis revealed the presence of many bacterial‐type terpene synthases in springtails. Four enzymes from Sinella curviseta were functionally characterised, resulting in the isolation of several compounds including sinellene ether, the first diterpene ether identified from a terpene synthase that represents a novel skeleton.

Bioactivity Assessment and Untargeted Metabolomics of the Mediterranean Sea Pen Pennatula phosphorea

open access: yesMarine Drugs
Octocorals have proven to be a prolific source of bioactive natural products, exhibiting a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities. Among octocorals, Pennatulaceans, commonly known as sea pens, are among the most dominant soft coral species living in

Mesophotic octocoral larval settlement preferences and behaviors

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Lab‐based coral reproduction is advancing restoration efforts to support coral populations injured by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Objectives This study aimed to answer foundational questions concerning coral spawning and larval settlement that need to be resolved for these mesophotic and deep‐sea coral species before ...

Diving into Diversity: Copepod Crustaceans in Octocoral Associations

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
This research provides an extensive analysis of the biodiversity and distribution patterns of copepod crustaceans associated with octocoral species. A comprehensive dataset comprising 966 records pertaining to 233 copepod species, encompassing 54 genera,

Kelp‐boulder transplants for habitat restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Degraded habitats present a major barrier to the survival and recovery of threatened marine species, particularly where structural or biogenic complexity has been lost, and natural regeneration ability is uncertain. Despite growing interest in habitat restoration, techniques rarely deliver rapid improvements at the necessary ...
