De oculogyre crisis

An oculogyric crisis is a tonic conjugated deviation of the eyes, usually upward. We present two cases with a drug induced oculogyric crisis. The differential diagnoses should include epilepsy, a functional neurological movement disorder, ocular tics, ocular dyskinesia or ocular bobbing.

Oculogyric Crisis after Metoclopramide Therapy

ABSTRACT Oculogyric crisis developed in a 21‐year‐old girl after 5 oral doses of 10 mg of metoclopramide. The symptoms were relieved by i.v. administration of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Although ocular side effects of metoclopramide are rare, it can induce an alarming oculogyric crisis in some sensitive subjects.

Oculogyric Crisis Induced by Lithium Carbonate

A man with typical symptoms of lithium intoxication had, in addition, severe and persistent oculogyric crises, which cleared completely during recovery. Previous reports have demonstrated that lithium may impair basal ganglia activity, but this is the first reported case of oculogyric crises induced by lithium carbonate intoxication.

We report a case of acute oculogyric crisis due to prochlorperazine administration in a young black woman with a concomitant viral infection. Neuroleptic medications are the most common cause of drug-induced acute dystonic reactions such as oculogyric crisis.
