Changes in the behaviour ofOcypode quadrata(Fabricius, 1787) after experimental trampling

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2018
AbstractThe effects of trampling are usually confounded by the diffuse impacts of the urbanization of sandy beaches. We performed a controlled experiment on a beach with low visitation rates to test the hypothesis that ghost crabs avoid building their burrows on impacted plots as a result of the compacted sediment, and they migrate to non-trampled ...

Reproductive Cycling in the Ghost Crab, Ocypode Quadrata (Fabr.) (Brachyura, Ocypodidae)

Crustaceana, 1972

Ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) modify their behavior during mirror exposure

Behavioural Processes
Recently, ghost crabs (Ocypode quadrata) were shown to exhibit behavior consistent with passing the mark test, which implies the capacity for self-recognition. Considering this, it seems reasonable to suggest these animals can also distinguish their mirror image from different social stimuli, such as live conspecifics.

Burrows of Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) as related to slopes of substrate surfaces

Journal of Paleontology, 1986
Diameter, dip and orientation of burrows of the ghost crab Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) were measured in back-beach areas: dune faces, dune crests, swales, blowouts and washover fans. Slope direction of the substrate at each burrow site was also measured. Results support three conclusions. First, burrow diameter increases landward.

Landmark use by ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) during wayfinding in a complex maze

Behavioural Processes
Species of crab have been shown to spatially track and navigate to consequential locations through different processes, such as path integration and landmark orienting. Few investigations examine their ability to wayfind in complex environments, like mazes, with multiple intersections and how they may utilize specific features to benefit this process ...

Burrows of the ghost crab Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) on the barrier islands, south-central Texas coast

Journal of Sedimentary Research, 1973
Abstract Burrows of the grapsoid crab Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) are important biogenic sedimentary structures on Texas barrier islands. Variation in the shape, diameter, length, orientation, and areal density of the burrows can be used to define subenvironments of the beach and foredune ridge.

Evaluating sampling techniques for measuring ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) burrow density

2017
Through field sampling, this study compares the ghost crab burrow densities acquired using a Fixed-Area sampling method to those measured using the Belt Transect method commonly used in ecological research. The two methods differ in area sampled per study site as well as distribution of area sampled along the beach, from dune to swash.

Ecological rôle of ghost crabs, Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) on an ocean beach: Scavengers or predators?

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1978
Abstract Food habits and ecological role of the ghost crab. Ocypode quadrata ( Fabricius) on a North Carolina barrier beach have been investigated in field and laboratory studies. Despite previous reports that they are scavengers, the crabs spent little time in ureas where drifted material accumulated.

Relative Growth and Sexual Maturity of the Texas Ghost Crab, Ocypode Quadrata (Fabr.) (Brachyura, Ocypodidae)

Crustaceana, 1969

Gustatory Responses of Ghost Crab Ocypode quadrata to Seawater Extracts and Chemical Fractions of Natural Stimuli

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1999
The efficacy of seawater-extracted fresh and decomposing blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) claw muscle homogenates as stimulants of feeding behavior by the ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) was tested with cheliped flexion as a bioassay. Stimulatory components of extracts were heat-stable and
