The archaeological excavation of the city of Pompei brought to light the Odon in a location adjacent to the great theatre, in the core of the urban environment. The Odeon, called theatrum tectum in the ancient Rome, had a room volume smaller than the great theatre and furthermore it was provided with a roof.

The Odeon, which opened in 1911, was a lavishly decorated grand cafe in the Viennese tradition which became a meeting place for locals and in particular the many emigres that passed through or lived in Zurich during World War I. It was at the Odeon that Joyce met Stefan Zweig in October 1918.

The Roman Bouleuterion and Odeon at Ashkelon

Between 1921-1922 two monumental buildings were uncovered during excavations by John Garstang at Ashkelon, a city on the southern coast of modern-day Israel. Located in the area of the ancient Roman forum, these buildings were interpreted as a Herodian senate house overlaid by a Byzantine theater.
