Relations of Age and Sex to Integumentary Glandular Regions in Rocky Mountain Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus)

Journal of Mammalogy, 1971
Microscopic studies were made on skin samples from seven specimens of Odocoileus hemionus hemionus collected at the beginning of the rutting season in northeastern Utah. Increases in thickness of sebaceous and sudoriferous gland layers with age were detectable in interdigital and tarsal glands.

Isolation of a Poxvirus from a Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1996
A poxvirus was isolated during the latter half of 1993 from a black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) that died of fulminant adenovirus infection in California (USA). The poxvirus was isolated from a pooled tissue homogenate, after repeated serial blind passages in primary black-tailed deer testicular cells.

Dermatomycosis (Ringworm) in Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus).

The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne, 2010
Six mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) with dermatomycosis are described. Trichophyton verrucosum was isolated from four. All infections were mild and were not debilitating. The lesions involved the legs in five animals and the face in two. This is the second report of ringworm in a wild ungulate in North America.

Skeletal development in the blacktail deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

2011
Seventeen male deer fawns of the year (Odocoileus hemionus colum- bianus) were raised to ages of four or six months. During this time, the nutrition of these animals was controlled so that five different patterns of alimentation were produced. The changes in the growth increments of the various regions of the skeleton with the pattern of alimentation ...

Pheromones in black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

Animal Behaviour, 1971
Abstract Black-tailed deer in captivity and in the field were observed for 3000 hr. The various contexts in which pheromones play a role were determined. For short-range sex, age and individual recognition, the tarsal scent is most important. Gas chromatograms show differences related to sex, age and individuals.

Foraging behaviour of captive black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)

1985
A review of the literature on black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus Richardson) feeding habits reveals considerable variation among animals, locations, and seasons. Processes affecting food selection, however, are poorly understood. Optimal foraging theory was explored as a means of predicting deer foraging behaviour and diet breadth ...
