An automated device for training white‐tailed deer to visual stimuli

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2012
Although many aspects of white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) biology and physiology have been studied thoroughly, few studies have confirmed deer cognitive perception, partly because of the difficulty of efficiently training sufficient numbers of ...

Mosquito feeding patterns in the context of West Nile and eastern equine encephalitis viruses in eastern Ontario, Canada

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Mosquitoes in Eastern Ontario, Canada, readily fed on bloodmeal hosts consistent with patterns observed in other regions of North America. Enzootic and bridge vector mosquitoes fed on amplification hosts like American Robins (Turdus migratorius) together with humans, highlighting a potential route for WNV and EEEV transmission to human populations. Our

Incorporating burn probability into spatial prioritization of woodland caribou habitat restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Habitat disturbance is a major driver of population declines of woodland caribou in Canada. Habitat restoration is a critical component of a successful, long‐term approach to caribou recovery; however, with limited resources, it is important to target areas where restoration efforts will provide maximum benefits to caribou.

Plastral Patterns Serve an Anti‐Predator Function in Freshwater Turtle Hatchlings

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
Color and pattern serve as a range of anti‐predator defense mechanisms across taxa, from crypsis to warning coloration, and these phenomena are well described across invertebrate and vertebrate systems. Painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) are so named for their striking coloration and patterning.

Predicted genetic consequences of alternative population control strategies for North American plains bison in Yellowstone National Park

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
Management of bison in Yellowstone National Park under the available strategies that maintained ≥3,500 individuals (1:1 sex ratio), removed <40% of the population at a time and prioritized relatives for removal were predicted to maintain genetic variation at levels consistent with long‐term conservation (>95% of existing variation).

Harvest increase and culling as tools for managing chronic wasting disease in white‐tailed deer

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
We used an agent‐based model to simulate the effect of CWD management on a white‐tailed deer population in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois. Our results suggest that wildlife managers should reconsider how and if they should manage CWD. Abstract Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that affects white‐tailed ...

Density‐dependent habitat selection in plains bison

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
Using GPS collar data, we tested whether habitat selection of plains bison in Grasslands National Park, Canada, was density dependent. Bison selected for areas of high vegetation productivity far from human activity when population density was low and increased use of lower productivity habitat closer to disturbance as density increased.
