Management of odontoid fractures
Neurosurgery, 1982Fifty-one adults with odontoid fractures were treated between 1966 and 1979. Approximately 50% had additional trauma; over half of the patients were younger than 40 years old. Three patients presented with myelopathy: 1 was complete at C-2 and the others recovered. Cervical roentgenograms were initially considered normal in 4 patients. The fracture was

Odontoid Fractures Treated by Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation
Spine, 1991While odontoid fractures are common injuries, disagreement exists regarding treatment. Some authors claim a high rate of pseudoarthrosis and have therefore recommended early posterior fixation and fusion. This, however, results in decreased cervical rotation.

The authors present some basic considerations on the fundamental problems raised by odontoid fractures. The necessity is stressed of a correct diagnosis as well as for careful evaluation of the evolution, this lesion being characteristically unstable and precariously consolidated.

Acute Odontoid Fractures: Anterior Odontoid Fixation
Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics, 2007Fractures of the dens are common injuries. The classification of these fractures remains controversial. Anterior odontoid fixation is a safe and effective means of stabilizing some of these injuries. We review classification of these injuries, treatment options, and surgical indications. Anterior odontoid fixation is reviewed in further detail, with an

Fractures of the C2 odontoid process are the most frequent injuries of the upper cervical spine (UCS). The majority of them are located at the base of the process (Type II). Less frequently, the fracture line passes through the C2 body (Type III) and exceptionally it remains above the transverse ligament (Type I).
