Off-Design Operation

2020
It is both surprising but logical that, except for a pure liquefier, a plant is almost never operated at its design conditions due to the safety margin that the client takes. Operation in turn-down regimes, when the final user load decreases, must cope with keeping the highest possible efficiency.

Computational analysis of off-design waveriders

Journal of Aircraft, 1993
Comprehensive inviscid and viscous numerical simulations of hypersonic flow past nonconical rounded-nose waveriders are presented. The flow fields and aerodynamic forces at off-design conditions are determined inviscidly by a space-marching CFD code with the initial-data plane provided by a time-marching Navier-Stokes CFD code.

Software synthesis for trade-off design

Proceedings of the 11th Knowledge-Based Software Engineering Conference, 2002
This paper details a case study of trade-off design in software synthesis. Domain-oriented software synthesis technology enables software designers to encode their own specific knowledge of software design into transformation rules. Thus, generated software is optimal and actually usable for the domain.

Off-Design Performance of Multistage Turbines

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1971
Nondimensional equations are developed for the performance of a multistage axial flow turbine operating at conditions which differ from those for which the turbine is designed. The effect of variations in inlet temperature, inlet pressure, exit pressure, and turbine speed is explored. Typical cases are evaluated.

Propeller modeling approaches for off–design operative conditions

Ocean Engineering, 2019
In adverse situations, such as maneuvering and motion in waves, severe variations of the propeller inflow may be experienced, resulting in an increase of propeller thrust and torque and in the generation of in-plane loads. This may cause undesired hull-vibratory loads, stress of the propulsive system and even affect somehow the ship dynamic response ...

Off-design performance of micro-scale solar Brayton cycle

Energy Conversion and Management, 2023
A novel methodology to design a micro-scale, solar-only, air-breathing, open Brayton cycle and assess its on- and off-design performance. The methodology is applied to generate and assess six thermodynamic layouts over a range of solar irradiation levels.

Optimal Capacity Expansion with Off-Design Costs

Journal of the Water Resources Planning and Management Division, 1977
The effect of “off-design” operating costs on operating and capacity expansion policy is considered for the planning of a water treatment facility. A mixed-integer programming model is presented for minimizing discounted costs of dynamically expanding a reverse-osmosis process that is required to remove increasing levels of salt over time from a ...

Off Design Performance Prediction of Steam Turbines

Volume 6: Energy Systems: Analysis, Thermodynamics and Sustainability, 2007
Steam turbines in coal fired power plants are designed for some fixed operating conditions. When operated at those fixed conditions, the turbines are supposed to give maximum cycle efficiency. But off-design conditions occur several times due to condenser variation, environmental change, plant aging, etc.

Pump Operation at Off-Design Conditions

1998
Theoretically, as long as the NPSH available is greater than the required NPSH, a centrifugal pump is capable of operating over a very wide range of capacities. As explained earlier, the exact operating capacity is determined by the intersection of the pump head-capacity curve with the system-head curve.

Off-design analysis of SOFC hybrid system

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2007
Abstract This paper sets out the results of mathematical modeling and numerical simulations of the off-design (part-load) operation of the solid oxide fuel cell hybrid system (SOFC-HS). The governing equations of SOFC-HS modeling are given. An adequate simulator of the SOFC stack was made and described.
