A review of antibiotic resistance among Campylobacter species in human, animal, and water sources in South Africa: a One Health Approach

open access: yesJournal of Water and Health, 2023
Campylobacter species are among the aetiological agents responsible for 400–500 million human diarrhoea cases per annum. The risk of dissemination of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter species between humans, animals, and the environment is anticipated ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Synergistic blend: Curcumin-loaded silver nanoparticles synthesized from Talaromyces atroroseus pigment for bio evaluation

open access: yesPlant Nano Biology
Metallic silver, particularly in the form of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), has gained renewed attention as a powerful antimicrobial solution. In the present investigation, AgNP was synthesized using pigments produced by Talaromyces atroroseus, and ...

Associated factors of pregnancy loss in two urban slums of Nairobi: A generalized estimation equations approach

open access: yesGlobal Epidemiology, 2020
Complications often arise during pregnancy leading to unfavorable pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirths, abortions/miscarriages, and neonatal losses placing a substantial burden on families, communities, and the health care system.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Examining gender differences in adult mortality mediated by household poverty in two urban slums of Nairobi

open access: yesGlobal Epidemiology, 2020
In sub-Saharan Africa, adult mortality estimates mainly obtained from nationally representative surveys such as Demographic and Health Surveys show discrepancies in all-cause mortality between men and women.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
