Improved Methodology of Weather Window Prediction for Offshore Operations Based on Probabilities of Operation Failure

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2017
The offshore wind industry is building and planning new wind farms further offshore due to increasing demand on sustainable energy production and already occupied prime resource locations closer to shore. Costs of operation and maintenance, transport and

Optimization of Decommission Strategy for Offshore Wind Farms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The life time of offshore wind farm is around 20 years. After that, the whole farm should be decommissioned which is also one of the main factors that contribute to the high investment.

Systems of reciprocity in human–ocean relationships: Across time, place, language and culture

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract In the face of large‐scale marine environmental challenges, solutions that meaningfully capture the complexity of socio‐cultural and economic factors contributing to such issues—and their solutions—are urgently needed. This scoping review explores examples of reciprocity in human–ocean relationships to inform the conceptual underpinning and ...

Comparing the economic feasibility of offshore floating wind and solar photovoltaic technologies in Central Mediterranean deep waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Malta, being a very small and densely populated island in the central Mediterranean, has little space for large scale onshore wind turbine or photovoltaic projects. Maltese territorial waters are mostly too deep for conventional offshore wind farms

Impact of an offshore wind farm on wave conditions and shoreline development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The influence of offshore wind farms on the wave conditions and impact on shoreline development is studied in a generic set-up of a coast and a shoreline.

Quantifying Migratory Bat Movements in Central Europe Across Seasons and Years Using a Vertical‐Looking Radar

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Vertical‐looking radar provides a first multi‐year analysis of migratory bat phenology in Europe. Bat activity was lowest in winter, increased from spring, and peaked in summer, with similar timing of pre‐ and post‐maternity migrations across years.

OWEZ pelagic fish, progress report and progression after T1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This report presents the current status of pelagic fish research in the Offshore Windfarm Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ) after having finalized the T0 baseline survey in 2003 and the T1 survey after construction of the wind farm in 2007.

Isolation, Insularity and Resilience: A Review of the Geophysical, Socioeconomic, and Environmental Vulnerabilities of Gran Canaria and Lesvos Islands for Policy Interventions to Global Change

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The dynamic nature of small islands being geographically isolated and their perceived connectedness with global networks complicates research attempts to draw general conclusions on whether insularity leads to marginalization or strengthens their resilience for sustainable development.

Wind farm wake effects at the Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm

open access: yes, 2021
As wind energy grows to a significant contributor to the electricity production mix, the number of wind farms with large turbines, especially offshore, increases as well. This leads to wind farms being built closer to each other to increase spatial power density.

Practical Methodology for Developing Visions for Carbon‐Neutral Cities and Communities

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cities and communities play important roles in sustainable development and climate change mitigation. This study presents a novel framework for developing carbon‐neutral visions for cities and communities. We established five “principles,” investigated options encompassing four parameters (management, goal setting, actions, and quantification),
