Mechanoregulatory Effects of Cell‐Scale Microwells on Epithelial Cell Phenotype

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In small polycaprolactone microwells, A549 epithelial cells span well edges, in contrast to cells growing on flat substrates. Focal adhesion sites (yellow) concentrate at topographic boundaries, while cytoskeletal tension (magenta stress fibers) is transmitted to the nucleus (blue), reducing nuclear sphericity.

Advancements in oil-water separation: The role of molybdenum and tungsten disulfide as cutting-edge 2D nanomaterials

open access: yesNext Materials
This article reviews recent strides in synthesizing, functionalizing, and utilizing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanomaterials owing to their exceptional wetting properties, which facilitate oil-water separation. Among various

Oil recovery through deemulsification research : separation of water from emulsified oil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In an effort to improve the environment, there is a need to recover and reuse the oil and water components of lubricating emulsions used in copper drawing and rolling processes. The Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc.

Bio‐Inspired Magnetically Tunable Structural Colors from Elliptical Self‐Assembled Block Copolymer Microparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopod‐inspired photonic microparticles with dynamic structural coloration are fabricated via confined self‐assembly of linear block copolymers into ellipsoids containing stacked lamellae. Embedded superparamagnetic nanoparticles enable rapid magnetic alignment, restoring vivid, angle‐dependent color.

Aqueous extraction of oleic sunflower oil from whole plant by twin-screw extruder: feasibility study, influence of screw configuration and operating conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Aqueous extraction process using water alone as medium is an alternative to the solvent oil extraction process from oilseeds. It enables simultaneous recovery of oil and protein.

4D‐Printed Magneto‐Plasmonic Microrobots for Programmable Spatiotemporal De‐Icing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 4D‐printing strategy is introduced to achieve programmable de‐icing devices. By aligning gold–magnetite nanofillers within a photosensitive resin, the printed structures exhibit dual magnetic and plasmonic functionalities, enabling precise spatio‐temporal ice removal through thermoplasmonic effects.

Separation of emulsified oil from a brackish water stream using ultrafiltration and coalescence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the past 40 years, a variety of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods have been developed and applied to mature, mostly depleted, and shale formation oil reservoirs. Chemical and sonic stimulation are two enhanced oil recovery methods in which emulsions

Fabrication of Pyridinic Nitrogen‐Functionalized Carbon Cloth for High‐Performance Iron‐Chromium Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The carbon cloth electrode with targeted pyridinic nitrogen doping, achieved via urea pyrolysis, effectively modulates the adsorption of Cr(II) species and enhances electron transfer, leading to significantly improved kinetics of the Cr(II)/Cr(III) reaction. The material demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 689.3 mAh and an energy efficiency of 72.

Surface tension of electrolytes: Hydrophilic and hydrophobic ions near an interface

open access: yes, 2008
We calculate the ion distributions around an interface in fluid mixtures of highly polar and less polar fluids (water and oil) for two and three ion species. We take into account the solvation and image interactions between ions and solvent. We show that

Polymer Infiltration Into SURMOF Channels Enables Hydrophobic and Solid‐Like Slippery Functional Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a polymer‐chain insertion strategy to fabricate pore‐threaded MOF thin films with precisely tuned surface chemistry and wettability. Grafting n‐alkane chains into the pillared layer Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) MOF thin film's vertical nanochannels enhances water stability, and induces hydrophobicity and lubricant‐free, solid‐like slippery behavior ...
