Numerical simulation and applications of equivalent film thickness in oil evaporation loss evaluation of internal floating-roof tank

Chemical engineering research & design, 2019
Internal floating-roof tank (IFRT) is widely used to store light oil products, but there exist oil evaporation from the rim gap of the floating deck and oil vapor diffusion into the atmosphere from several vents on the tank wall or tank roof.

Oil Film Thickness measurements in a Dynamically Loaded Journal Bearing—A Comparison of Measured and Calculated Minimum Oil Film Thickness with Newtonian Lubricating Oils

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1988
<div class="htmlview paragraph">As previously reported an experimental apparatus has been built that allows direct measurement of the oil film thickness in a bearing that is subjected to dynamic toads and shaft speeds representative of those occurring in automobile engine connecting-rod, big-end bearings.

Film thickness anomalies in very thin elastohydrodynamic oil films

1997
Experimental studies of very thin elastohydrodynamic (EHD) oil films have shown, or suggested, that several aspects of lubricant behaviour do not fully conform to the model presumed by classical EHD theory. This study examines three forms of behaviour which appear to be anomalous.

Thin oil-film thickness distribution measurement using ultrasonic arrays

NDT & E International, 2008
Abstract This paper describes an approach for calculating the oil-film thickness distribution in machine elements using an ultrasonic array, based on the measurement of normal and oblique incidence reflection coefficients. An experimental system is described in which a high-precision digital piezoelectric translator (DPT) is used to controllably ...

Oil Film thickness Indicators for Sleeve-type Bearings

Scientific Lubrication, 1951
In studies of engines and engine lubricants, it is often desirable to measure clearances between shafts and sleeve—or journal-type bearings during operation. However, it is usually rather difficult to obtain such measurements without affecting the operation, particularly at high speeds. A method recently developed by M. L.

Simultaneous monitoring of oil film thickness and temperature in fluid film bearings

Tribology International, 2001
This paper reports on the application of an eddy current sensor with an active compensation for changes in sensor temperature to simultaneous monitoring oil film thickness and temperature in a tilting pad thrust bearing. Sensor design, calibration procedure, sensitivity and accuracy are described.

Oil film thickness measurement using airborne laser-induced water Raman backscatter

Applied Optics, 1980
The use of laser-induced water Raman backscatter for remote thin oil film detection and thickness measurement is reported here for the first time. A 337.1-nm nitrogen laser was used to excite the 3400-cm(-1) OH stretch band of natural ocean water beneath the oil slick from an altitude of 150 m.

Effect of proprietary oil additives on elastohydrodynamic film thickness

Tribology International, 1983
Abstract A study is reported of the effect on a simulated elastohydrodynamic contact of the addition of three proprietary products to the lubricating oil. Chromatic interferometry was used to study changes in lubricant film thickness. Under the conditions employed it was found that Molyslip did not affect film thickness markedly, but there is ...
