An optimal control model is constructed where the cutting of old-growth forest generates jobs and adds to the stock of land devoted to "newgrowth," rotational forestry. Welfare is determined by the number of jobs in the forest economy and the stock of old-growth forest, which provides "nontimber" benefits.

Old-growth forests of the Acadian Forest Region
Environmental Reviews, 2003In the absence of sufficient data from directed studies of old-growth forests in the Acadian Forest Region (AFR), we must rely on a general knowledge of forest ecology and natural succession, population biology, disturbance dynamics, and palynological evidence to understand the probable extent of old-growth, late-successional forest types before ...

Forest-Stream Interactions in Eastern Old-Growth Forests
2018The largescale recovery of eastern forests from historic clearing is a remarkable example of forest ecosystem resilience (Foster and Aber 2004). More than 150 years after the peak of agricultural clearing in eastern North America, many forests across the region have reached maturity and some are progressing toward an old-growth condition (Brooks et al.

Distance decay in an old‐growth neotropical forest
Journal of Vegetation Science, 2005Abstract. Questions: Does distance decay exist in an old‐growth neotropical forest? Is this distance decay stronger than expected due to environmental heterogeneity alone? At what spatial scales are distance decay manifested?Location: La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica, Central America. Methods: An index of distance decay is applied appropriate

Old-growth forests with 300- to 400-year-old trees are uncommon in the eastern United States, but forests that regenerated after anthropogenic disturbance are widespread.

Old growth in the Great Lakes forest
Environmental Reviews, 2003The Great Lakes forest region is a bioclimatic zone between the northern boreal forest and the eastern deciduous forest of North America. Relatively warm, dry conditions prevailed during the first half of the Holocene, at which time pines (Pinus spp.) and oaks (Quercus spp.) were more prominent than during the second half.

Old-Growth Forests Of Serebryanoborsky Forestry

Relictual Amphibians and Old‐Growth Forests
Conservation Biology, 1990Abstract: Terrestrial and aquatic herpetofauna were sampled by pitfall traps, time‐constrained searches, and area‐constrained searches (stream sites only) over a three‐year period to examine the importance of forest age to amphibians and reptiles.

Old-Growth Forest Spared for Now
Science, 2003FORESTRYForest scientists won a victory of sorts last month when Mexican officials agreed to postpone logging in a rare forest ecosystem in Baja California. A delegation of four American scientists visited Mexicali, the state capital, on 20 January to plead for the preservation of what one calls "the only pristine conifer forest in North America ...
