Matching Multiple Backgrounds: Egg Camouflage Across Different Habitats in a Shorebird

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We studied egg camouflage in Kentish plovers nesting in two visually distinct habitats, sandy beaches and salt marshes, in southern Spain. Despite initial expectations of local adaptation or compromise camouflage, the birds instead chose nest sites within each habitat that shared overlapping colour and visual texture characteristics, allowing effective

Effects of Cooking Methods on the Flavor Characteristics of Volatiles of Boletus edulis Based on GC‐IMS, E‐Nose, and Sensory Evaluation

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study successfully established characteristic fingerprints of volatile flavor components in Boletus edulis subjected to different cooking methods. Using principal component analysis (PCA) to quantitatively evaluate changes in flavor substances, and combined with a sensory evaluation system, it comprehensively assessed the impact of cooking ...

The Visual Umwelt of primates and Hippocampal Representations of Space

open access: yesHippocampus, Volume 36, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Evolution sculpts the brain's sensory adaptations. Because these adaptations differ markedly across species, it is challenging for humans to fully comprehend how other animals perceive the world. For a nocturnal mouse, the subjective sensory world—its Umwelt—is dominated by odors, sounds, and textures, with visual input playing a secondary ...

Assessing potential impacts of black bear predation on neonatal mortality in boreal caribou

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 1, January 2026.
We used simulations to show that even if caribou give birth in areas with the least chance of encountering a black bear, there are so many bears on the landscape that predation risk for caribou calves can still be quite high. Bear densities used in our simulation were typical for the boreal forest.

Supervised Machine Learning Analysis of Food‐Related Quality of Life Impact in Olfactory Dysfunction

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 136, Issue 1, Page 119-125, January 2026.
This study assessed the impact of olfactory dysfunction (OD) on quality of life (QoL) using machine learning to identify key factors. The results showed that food‐related difficulties were the most significant factor affecting overall QoL. ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to assess the effect of olfactory dysfunction (OD) on quality of life
