An unexpected insight into the cause of olfactory dysfunction: fibrillogenesis of odorant-binding proteins

open access: yesCell Death Discovery
Olfactory dysfunction is a common complication of serious pathologies, including neurodegenerative disorders, bacterial and viral infections, including COVID-19, and others. Despite the widespread prevalence of olfactory disorders, the pathophysiological

The effectiveness of olfactory training for chronic olfactory disorder following COVID-19: a systematic review

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience
BackgroundChronic olfactory disorders are some of the most frequent post-COVID-19 presentations. Olfactory training (OT) is currently the most popular method used for treating post-viral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD).

The Mind From Within: Visceral Roots of Human Cognition

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The physiological activity of visceral organs, such as the heart, the lungs, and the gut, is surprisingly linked to many sophisticated mental operations, such as remembering the past, being aware of ourselves, making choices, and forging social bonds.

Topological reorganization of odor representations in the olfactory bulb. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Odors are initially represented in the olfactory bulb (OB) by patterns of sensory input across the array of glomeruli. Although activated glomeruli are often widely distributed, glomeruli responding to stimuli sharing molecular features tend to be ...

The influence of olfactory training on depressive symptoms and olfactory function in patients with olfactory dysfunction – A prospective observational pilot study

open access: yesJournal of Affective Disorders Reports
Introduction: Olfaction plays an important role in different aspects of our daily functioning and there is a positive correlation between olfactory dysfunction (OD) and depressive symptoms.

Smart Nanotechnologies for Multimodal Neuromodulation and Brain Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent advances in smart nanotechnologies are expanding the toolbox for brain interfacing, from wireless neuromodulation and high‐resolution sensing to targeted delivery within the central nervous system. By combining responsive nanomaterials with bioinspired design, these platforms enable multimodal interactions with neurons and glia, while also ...

Optophysiological analysis of pattern classification strategies in the zebrafish olfactory bulb [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Classification of overlapping activity patterns is a common problem for sensory systems. For a robust representation of sensory stimuli, neuronal circuits should generalize over input patterns reflecting variations of the same stimulus but separate ...

Olfactory Malformations in Mendelian Disorders of the Epigenetic Machinery

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
Usually overlooked by physicians, olfactory abnormalities are not uncommon. Olfactory malformations have recently been reported in an emerging group of genetic disorders called Mendelian Disorders of the Epigenetic Machinery (MDEM).

Remote Magnetomechanical Neuromodulation Uncovers Therapeutic Mechanisms for Alleviating Parkinsonian Symptoms in Freely Moving Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetomechanical neuromodulation using magnetic nanodiscs enables remote activation of neurons. In a hemiparkinsonian mouse model, alternating magnetic fields actuate the nanodiscs to generate torque that opens mechanosensitive ion channels within the subthalamic nucleus, thereby modulating basal ganglia motor circuitry.
