Gazing into the abyss: A glimpse into the diversity, distribution, and behaviour of heterotrophic protists from the deep‐sea floor

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 3, March 2024.
A phylogenetic tree of eukaryotes showcases representatives of protists discovered in deep‐sea sediments through a combination of metabarcoding and direct observations. Each bubble within the tree signifies a distinct ‘supergroup’, with dotted bubbles indicating supergroups currently lacking recorded members known to inhabit the deep‐sea floor.

Large-scale phylogenomic analysis reveals the phylogenetic position of the problematic taxon Protocruzia and unravels the deep phylogenetic affinities of the ciliate lineages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Ciliophora is one of the most studied protist lineages because of its important ecological role in the microbial loop. While there is an abundance of molecular data for many ciliate groups, it is commonly limited to the 18S ribosomal RNA locus. There

Genomic resolution of a cold subsurface aquifer community provides metabolic insights for novel microbes adapted to high CO2 concentrations. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
As in many deep underground environments, the microbial communities in subsurface high-CO2 ecosystems remain relatively unexplored. Recent investigations based on single-gene assays revealed a remarkable variety of organisms from little studied phyla in ...

Microbial hitchhikers on intercontinental dust: high-throughput sequencing to catalogue microbes in small sand samples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Microbiological studies on the intercontinental transport of dust are confounded by the difficulty of obtaining sufficient material for analysis. Axenic samples of dust collected at high altitudes or historic specimens in museums are often so small and ...
