Azoospermia and Oligozoospermia Etiology and Clinical Findings

Three hundred sixty infertile men with sperm counts below 10 million/ml have been through a complete clinical investigation. The most important etiological factors are discussed and the findings at the clinical examination of the genitalia externa and prostate/seminal vesicles are reported.

Treatment of idiopathic oligozoospermia with tamoxifen.

Eighteen subfertile men, with idiopathic normogonadotropic oligozoospermia were treated with an antiestrogenic compound, tamoxifen (Nolvadex), at the dose of 20 mg/day for four months. Hormonal parameters (LH, FSH, Testosterone, Prolactin) were evaluated before treatment and after 45 and 90 days of therapy.

Tamoxifen and Testolactone in Therapy of Oligozoospermia: Results of a Randomized Study

40 patients with oligoasthenozoospermia in infertile marriages were subjected to randomized treatment with 30 mg tamoxifen/day (n = 20), or with 30 mg tamoxifen/day and 150 mg testolactone/day (n = 20), to prevent elevation of estradiol levels during monotherapy with tamoxifen. In both groups there was a significant increase in FSH, LH and testosterone.

Treatment of Oligozoospermia with Tamoxifen (open and controlled studies)

Open and double-blind therapeutic studies were carried out on the effects of tamoxifen in oligozoospermia. The examinations involved 74 patients. The first group (n = 20) received tamoxifen 20 mg/day; the second group (n = 54) got tamoxifen or placebo for 3 months.

Because of poor results in treating subfertile men, a Clinic was set up in 1972 at the London Hospital to provide practical therapies. Included in the group was a gynaecologist and a urologist, and this review is compiled as a result of their experiences. Particular interest has been payed to patients with sperm antibodies and oligozoospermia.
