Quasi 6‐Day Wave Variability in the Thermosphere and Ionosphere: Observations and Modeling

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Satellite observations of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere from TIMED‐SABER and ICON‐MIGHTI reveal a clear Quasi 6‐Day Wave (Q6DW) event in the winds and temperatures in this region. This Q6DW event persists across multiple data sets throughout the middle‐to‐upper thermosphere and the F‐region ionosphere, including GOLD disk ...

Statistical Scale Analyses of a Diurnal Periodicity in Auroral Kilometric Radiation, Observed by Wind/WAVES

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The Earth's strongest natural radio emission is Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), which is correlated with auroral intensity, and is a barometer for space weather. AKR is generated by the electron cyclotron maser instability, with sources on auroral field lines. Previous work on AKR and radio emissions from other planets (or stars) points to

Ship‐Based GNSS Tsunami Detection: Pilot Network Demonstration

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We demonstrate the potential for ship‐based GNSS systems to contribute to tsunami warning. We built a pilot network of 10 ships—8 commercial and 2 research vessels—equipped with a tsunami detection package consisting of a geodetic‐grade GNSS antenna and receiver, and satellite internet communications.

Variation of Venusian Gravity Wave Absolute Momentum Fluxes and Drag as Retrieved From the Akatsuki Mission

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Using temperature retrievals from Akatsuki radio occultation measurements, we characterize gravity wave activity as a function of vertical wavenumber and altitude. For the first time, we estimate the absolute horizontal momentum fluxes and the magnitude of the gravity wave drag (i.e., wave acceleration), assuming a horizontal wavelength of 300

Robust Short‐Term Forecasting of Thermospheric Density and Orbit Prediction Using an Interpretable iTransformer Model

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Accurate short‐term forecasting of thermospheric mass density is crucial for satellite operations. However, achieving high‐precision predictions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we develop an iTransformer framework that forecasts thermospheric density over the next 24 hr using observations from the preceding 24 hr. Using density
