Episodic Visual Hallucinations, Inference and Free Energy

open access: yesEntropy
Understandings of how visual hallucinations appear have been highly influenced by generative approaches, in particular Friston’s Active Inference conceptualization.

Somatic overgrowth predisposes to seizures in autism spectrum disorders.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BackgroundComorbidity of Autism Spectrum Disorders with seizures or abnormal EEG (Autism-Epilepsy Phenotype) suggests shared pathomechanisms, and might be a starting point to identify distinct populations within the clinical complexity of the autistic ...

SC-triggered plasma waves observed by the Akebono satellite in the polar regions and the plasmasphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Plasma wave phenomena associated with sudden commencements (SCs) were analyzed based on observations conducted with the Akebono satellite, which has been collecting data for more than 13 years (since March 1989). Simultaneous plasma wave observation data

The course of cancer related fatigue up to ten years in early breast cancer patients. What impact in clinical practice? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Little is known about the cancer related fatigue (CRF) along cancer course and risk factors that could predict CRF development and persistence in breast cancer (BC) survivors.

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Ginzburg-Landau approximation for self-sustained oscillators weakly coupled on complex directed graphs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A normal form approximation for the evolution of a reaction-diffusion system hosted on a directed graph is derived, in the vicinity of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. Weak diffusive couplings are assumed to hold between adjacent nodes.

Exploiting metabolic adaptations to overcome dabrafenib treatment resistance in melanoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that dabrafenib‐resistant melanoma cells undergo mitochondrial remodeling, leading to elevated respiration and ROS production balanced by stronger antioxidant defenses. This altered redox state promotes survival despite mitochondrial damage but renders resistant cells highly vulnerable to ROS‐inducing compounds such as PEITC, highlighting redox

Agreement, dependencies, and Surface Correspondence in Obolo and beyond

open access: yesStellenbosch Papers in Linguistics Plus, 2014
Obolo, a lower cross-river language spoken in the Niger Delta, exhibits an implicational dependency between the onset and coda of a syllable: if a syllable has a nasal onset, then it cannot also have an oral coda (Faraclas 1984, Rowland-Oke 2003 ...

Finite temperature dissipation and transport near quantum critical points

open access: yes, 2010
I review a variety of model systems and their quantum critical points, motivated by recent experimental and theoretical developments. These are used to present a general discussion of the non-zero temperature crossovers in the vicinity of a quantum ...
