OUTGROUPS AND ONTOGENY

Cladistics, 1985
Abstract— Common themes in some recent expositions of character phylogeny are attempts to prove that outgroup comparison is a method of the greatest generality, and that the ontogenetic criterion reduces to outgroup comparison. Another common theme is that pattern cladistics is wrongheaded in suggesting that ontogenetic data have a unique value for ...

Ontogeny of erythropoiesis

Current Opinion in Hematology, 2008
The present study review examines the current understanding of the ontogeny of erythropoiesis with a focus on the emergence of the embryonic (primitive) erythroid lineage and on the similarities and differences between the primitive and the fetal/adult (definitive) forms of erythroid cell maturation.Primitive erythroid precursors in the mouse embryo ...

Ontogeny

2021
Unlike any other animal we have a history. We live in historical time thanks to culture and culture is largely technological in nature, whether the technologies we identify are languages, cities or machines. History as the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus told us, is the story of constant change.

Ontogeny of Performance in Vertebrates

Physiological and Biochemical Zoology, 2006
When competing for food or other resources, or when confronted with predators, young animals may be at a disadvantage relative to adults because of their smaller size. Additionally, the ongoing differentiation and growth of tissues and the development of sensory-motor integration during early ontogeny may constrain performance.

Ontogeny

2007
The developmental history of an organism from its origin to maturity. It starts with fertilization and ends with the attainment of an adult state, usually expressed in terms of both maximal body size and sexual maturity. Fertilization is the joining of haploid gametes (a spermatozoon and an ovum, each bearing half the number of chromosomes typical for ...

Ontogeny of Bovine Hemostasis

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1979
SUMMARY Ontogeny of selected hemostatic system components was studied in 120 bovine fetuses which had been divided into eight monthly gestational age groups. Fetal blood was subjected to the following tests: platelet count, partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen quantitation, and assays for prothrombin and factors V ...

THE ONTOGENY OF CEREBRAL DOMINANCE

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1975
It has long been known that in most people the language function depends on the activity of the left cerebral hemisphere. It is clear that language develops from a base state of no language. But does language lateralization analogously develop from a base state of no lateralization? It has been generally assumed that this is so.

The Ontogeny of Fluctuating Asymmetry

The American Naturalist, 2003
We tested seven hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which fluctuating asymmetry (FA) originates. We did this by analyzing data on four bilateral characters measured repeatedly during the development of individual domestic fowl. Immediately posthatching, there was substantial directional asymmetry, which rapidly decreased.

Conclusion: The Ontogeny of Investigating Primate Ontogeny

2012
The development of offspring in primates, including humans, provides the focus for Building Babies: Primate development in proximate and ultimate perspectives (nobly edited by Katie Hinde, Kathryn Clancy, and Julienne Rutherford). The volume has corralled historically disparate fields into a synthetic whole with the aim of generating a cohesive cross ...

The Ontogeny of Human Hearing

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1992
The development of human hearing from the 26th week of fetal life to the third year post natal life is reviewed. The human fetus can perceive, react, and store auditory information from the 26th week of fetal life. This ability appears to play a role in the development of language.
