Predicting the likelihood and intensity of mosquito infection from sex specific Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte density

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Understanding the importance of gametocyte density on human-to-mosquito transmission is of immediate relevance to malaria control. Previous work (Churcher et al., 2013) indicated a complex relationship between gametocyte density and mosquito infection ...

Prevalence, Genetic Diversity, and Zoonotic Transmission Potential of Cryptosporidium spp. in Snakes: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, September 2026.
This study provides the first global systematic synthesis of Cryptosporidium spp. infection in snakes. A pooled prevalence of 12.6% was identified, with higher occurrence in captive‐associated populations than in wild snakes. Eight Cryptosporidium species, including multiple zoonotic taxa, were reported, underscoring the potential role of snakes within

Nanoparticle Lysis of Cryptosporidium Oocysts

open access: yesMethods and Protocols
The extraction of DNA from Cryptosporidium oocysts is challenging due to the robust oocyst wall. Nanoparticles have been applied to disinfect Cryptosporidium oocysts; here, we demonstrate the utilisation of nanoparticles to disrupt the oocyst wall to enable sporozoite lysis and detection via PCR.

The Effect of Multi‐Strain Probiotics, Zinc and Copper on the Performance of Broiler Chickens Challenged With Clostridium perfringens

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, September 2026.
Our study showed that challenging broiler chickens with Clostridium perfringens reduced performance and increased mortality. Conversely, supplementing the diet with additives, such as chelated zinc, chelated copper and probiotics, helped mitigate the negative effects of C. perfringens.

Proteomic Analysis of Fractionated Eimeria tenella Sporulated Oocysts Reveals Involvement in Oocyst Wall Formation

open access: yes, 2023
Eimeria tenella is the most pathogenic intracellular protozoan parasite of the Eimeria species. Eimeria oocyst wall biogenesis appears to play a central role in oocyst transmission.

A Review on Heat Stress in Broiler Chickens: Mechanisms, Effects and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, September 2026.
Heat stress caused by high temperature and humidity compromises broiler health, welfare, and productivity by reducing feed intake, growth performance, and feed efficiency, while increasing mortality, oxidative stress, metabolic disturbances, intestinal dysfunction, gut dysbiosis, immune suppression, and meat quality deterioration.

Ultrastructure of the Oocyst wall formation in

open access: yes, 2016
The ultrastructure of the developing oocyst of Eimeria? beauchampi Leger and Duboscq, 1917 was studied from the ventral digestive epithelium of the hepatic region of Glossobalanus minutus (Enteropneusta).

Acute Diarrheal Disease Associated With Climate Variability and Water Supply System Configuration: An Ecological Study in Brazil

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 9, September 2026.
Acute diarrheal disease rates are associated with seasonality and the type of water supply system. ABSTRACT Acute diarrheal disease (ADD) remains a major public health problem in low‐ and middle‐income countries, where vulnerabilities in water supply systems (WSSs) are associated with increased exposure to disease.

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium species in recreational versus non-recreational water sources [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Cryptosporidiosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, represents the major public health concern of water utilities in developed nations due to its small size, resistance to disinfection and ability to be shed in large numbers in faeces ...

Cryptosporidium volunteer study: Estimating oocyst burden in waste water

open access: yes, 2014
Cryptosporidium infections cause diarrheal illness in humans and chronic disease in immunocompromised individuals. Some infections can lead to community outbreaks from secondary transmission.
