Morphological Exceptions to Vowel Reduction in Central Catalan and the Problem of the Missing Base

open access: yesCatalan Journal of Linguistics, 2016
A certain class of Central Catalan compounds characterized by a first component that lacks a related output word is discussed and analyzed in connection with Vowel Reduction and Destressing.

Atomic opacities [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1994
Let Iv(r, θ) be the intensity of radiation of frequency v, at a distance r from the centre of a star and in a direction making an angle θ to the outward normal. In a plane-parallel approximation the equation of radiative transfer is where 𝛋v is the opacity and jv the emissivity. The net outward flux of radiant energy is

Prospects for top-down derivation

open access: yesCatalan Journal of Linguistics, 2009
This article explores a model of grammar involving top-down derivations, where each step (“splitmerge”) yields an asymmetric pair of elements relevant to the expression of order, information, and grammatical features.

Dust Opacities [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
Dust particles are the dominant source of opacity at (almost) all wavelengths and in (almost) all regions of protoplanetary disks. By this they govern the transport of energy through the disk and thus the thermal structure. Furthermore, their spectral properties determine the low resolution spectral signature observed at infrared wavelengths.

Overapplication opacity in phonological acquisition

open access: yesNordlyd: Tromsø University Working Papers on Language & Linguistics, 2013
Phonological opacity is a challenge for parallel OT, which does not allow for intermediate levels of representation. Several modifications of the theory have been proposed over the years to incorporate opacity, all of them falling short of accounting for

Against Opacity [PDF]

open access: yesResearch on Language and Computation, 2007
Compositionality often presupposes a notion of opacity in that the combination of the meanings M and N of the subconstituents of a constituent C into the meaning of C must be blind to the inner structure of M and N. However, for cases where there is no direct 1-1 mapping between (surface) syntactic and semantic structure, opacity seems to be too strong

A reanalysis of abstract contrasts and opacity in Bondu-so tongue root harmony

open access: yesGlossa, 2020
This paper explores a number of controversial consequences of previous abstract analyses of Bondu-so (Dogon) vowels and vowel harmony, particularly for the explanation of phonological opacity.

Photoelectric cross-sections of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We provide simple polynomial fits to the X-ray photoelectric cross-sections (0.03 < E < 10keV) for mixtures of gas and dust found in protoplanetary disks. Using the solar elemental abundances of Asplund et al.
