Practical Open-Loop Optimistic Planning [PDF]

open access: yesECML/PKDD, 2019
We consider the problem of online planning in a Markov Decision Process when given only access to a generative model, restricted to open-loop policies - i.e. sequences of actions - and under budget constraint.

Tractable Open Loop Policies for Joint Overbooking and Capacity Control Over a Single Flight Leg with Multiple Fare Classes [PDF]

open access: yesTransportation Science, 2012
In this paper, we consider the joint overbooking and capacity control problem over a single flight leg with multiple fare classes. The objective is to maximize the net expected revenue, which is given by the difference between the expected revenue from the accepted requests and the expected penalty cost from the denied reservations.

Open-Loop Equilibria for an LQ-Differential Game of Stabilization Policies

open access: yesIFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1987
Abstract In this paper we study a two-person non-cooperative differential game model of the trade-off between unemployment and inflation with the government as player one and the central bank as the second player. Open-loop Nash and Stackelberg equilibrium solutions are derived analytically; it is shown that they do not coincide.

Integrating macroeconomic and public health impacts in social planning policies for pandemic response

open access: yesEpidemics
Infectious disease outbreaks with pandemic potential present challenges for mitigation and control. Policymakers must reduce disease-associated morbidity and mortality while also minimizing socioeconomic costs of interventions.

A Policy for Open-Loop Attenuation of Disturbance Effects Caused by Uncertain Ground Properties in Running [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings 2007 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2007
Outside of the laboratory, accurate models of ground impact dynamics are either difficult or impossible to obtain. Instead, a rigid ground model is often used in gait and controller design, which simplifies the system model and allows attention to remain focused on other aspects of running.

Leveraging Stochasticity for Open Loop and Model Predictive Control of Spatio-Temporal Systems

open access: yesEntropy, 2021
Stochastic spatio-temporal processes are prevalent across domains ranging from the modeling of plasma, turbulence in fluids to the wave function of quantum systems. This letter studies a measure-theoretic description of such systems by describing them as

BP-MPC: Optimizing the Closed-Loop Performance of MPC Using Backpropagation [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2023
Model predictive control (MPC) is pervasive in research and industry. However, designing the cost function and the constraints of the MPC to maximize closed-loop performance remains an open problem. To achieve optimal tuning, we propose a backpropagation

Basic Income with High Open Innovation Dynamics: The Way to the Entrepreneurial State

open access: yesJournal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market and Complexity, 2019
Currently, the world economy is approaching a near-zero growth rate. Governments should move from a market-failure-oriented to a system-failure-oriented approach to understanding this problem, and transform to an entrepreneurial state to motivate the ...
