Lactate Threshold and Swimming Performance in World-Class Open-Water Swimmers
Purpose: The assessment of lactate threshold (LT) and its relationship to open-water (OW) performance is crucial. This study aimed (1) to analyze LT in world-class OW swimmers, (2) to compare swimming speed at LT (SSLT) and 4 mmol·L−1 of blood lactate concentration ([La−]; SS4), and (3) to examine the relationships between SSLT and swimming performance.

A General Performance Model for the Open-Loop Water-Cooled Gas Turbine [PDF]
A thermodynamic efficiency analysis of a simple open cycle, open-loop, water-cooled gas turbine is presented. Losses due to water pumping work, mixing of water and steam with turbine gas, and heat transfer from the gas are included. To achieve generality and provide system design guidelines, the results are presented in terms of dimensionless variables.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

In recent years, the postulation that deception is necessary for placebos to have an effect on pain relief or increased well-being has come into question. Latest studies have shown that an openly administered mock drug works just as well as a deceptively

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Prediction of the Open-Water Performance of Ducted Propellers with a Panel Method
In the present work, a comparison between the results obtained by a panel code with a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code is made to obtain a better insight on the viscous effects of the ducted propeller and on the limitations of the inviscid ...

Initial geological considerations before installing ground source heat pump systems [PDF]
The performance of an open- or closed-loop ground source heat pump system depends on local geological conditions. It is important that these are determined as accurately as possible when designing a system, to maximize efficiency and minimize ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
