Towards a theory of meaning in biology: a proposal for an operative definition.
Rivista di biologia, 2003Information is a concept developed inside the context of computational and computer sciences. Entropy is a concept developed inside physics context. The best concept in biology is that of "meaning" which is quite impossible to be measured as stated by some examples which are reported.

Non-operative management of rectal cancer: understanding tumor biology [PDF]
The management of locally-advanced rectal cancer involves a combination of chemotherapy, chemoradiation, and surgical resection to provide excellent local tumor control and overall survival. However, aspects of this multimodality approach are associated with significant morbidity and long-term sequelae.

Observations of DNA transfer within an operational Forensic Biology Laboratory
Forensic Science International: Genetics, 2016Advances in technology to both generate and interpret DNA profiles has seen the expansion of the ability to provide opinions about results obtained from very low levels of starting biological material. The response in court has been to question the mode by which the DNA came to be on an item, rather than questioning its presence.

Use of operative temperature and standard operative temperature models in thermal biology
Journal of Thermal Biology, 2005Abstract Operative temperature ( T e ) and standard operative temperature ( T es ) models have been used to address ecological questions about the thermal biology of ectotherms and endotherms for over 25 years. This review focuses on the accuracy and use of T e and T es models in ecological and physiological studies. The utility of T e and

Biology and prognosis by age of primary operable breast cancer.
Cancer Research, 2009Abstract Abstract #2082 Introduction Breast cancer (BC) biology and prognosis are age dependent. We studied the effect of age on BC biology, treatment and prognosis.
Methods Data from 2059 consecutive patients, primary operated for invasive BC in UZ Leuven (01/01/00–01/06/05), were used. Patients with ≥ 3.5 yrs

Co-Operation of Biology-Related Algorithms for Constrained Multiobjective Optimization
2015A modification of the self-tuning meta-heuristic, called Co-Operation of Biology Related Algorithms for multiobjective optimization problems COBRA-m is introduced. Its basic idea consists of a cooperative work of five well-known bionic algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization, Wolf Pack Search, the Firefly Algorithm, the Cuckoo Search Algorithm ...

Peri-operative biology in primary breast cancer: a credible therapeutic target
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, 2016Over the last 25 years, there has been a growing body of basic science, modeling, and clinical data suggesting that the peri-operative period in the treatment of primary breast cancer is dynamic and can be manipulated to improve long-term outcomes. Clinical data have demonstrated early peaks of hazards for recurrence and emphasized the relationship of ...

Analysis of Degenerate Diffusion Operators Arising in Population Biology
2012In this chapter, we describe our recent work on the analytic foundations for the study of degenerate diffusion equations which arise as the infinite population limits of standard models in population genetics. Our principal results concern existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions when the data belong to anisotropic Holder spaces, adapted to ...
