Absence seizures: Update on signaling mechanisms and networks

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Absence seizures (AS) are a hallmark of genetic generalized epilepsies (GGE), characterized by brief episodes of impaired consciousness accompanied by electroencephalographic spike‐and‐wave discharges (SWDs). Traditionally attributed to cortico‐thalamo‐cortical (CTC) dysrhythmia, emerging evidence suggests a more intricate pathophysiological ...

Unilateral Optic Disc Pseudo-duplication with Contralateral Chorioretinal Coloboma: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yes
Optic disc pseudo-duplication (ODPD) is a rare condition presumed to be a form of retinal coloboma. In this report, we present the case of a child with ODPD in one eye and diffuse chorioretinal coloboma, along with microcornea in the fellow eye.

Spectrum of Congenital Malformations in Sex Chromosome Tetrasomies and Pentasomies: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sex chromosome aneuploidies represent a heterogeneous group of chromosomal conditions, in which phenotypic complexity generally increases with the number of supernumerary sex chromosomes. While Turner syndrome and sex chromosome trisomies are relatively well characterized, less is known about congenital malformations in sex chromosome ...

Accurate and reliable segmentation of the optic disc in digital fundus images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We describe a complete pipeline for the detection and accurate automatic segmentation of the optic disc in digital fundus images. This procedure provides separation of vascular information and accurate inpainting of vessel-removed images, symmetry-based ...

Retinal dystrophies simulating geographic atrophy: A diagnostic challenge

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Geographic atrophy (GA) is the chronic loss of retinal pigment epithelium, photoreceptors and choriocapillaris, marking the dry late stage of age‐related macular degeneration (AMD). GA prevalence is expected to rise in the upcoming decades. Advanced GA leads to central scotomas, reducing visual acuity and quality of life, potentially resulting

Cerebral Ventriculomegaly With Abnormality of the Aqueduct of Sylvius: A Case Series

open access: yesClinical Genetics, EarlyView.
Genetic testing leads to a diagnostic rate of ~30% in a fetal cohort with cerebral ventriculomegaly where the neuropathological examination revealed a stenosis or atresia of the aqueduct of Sylvius. ABSTRACT Fetal cerebral ventriculomegalies are brain anomalies with potentially poor neurodevelopmental prognosis.

Mosaic KRAS Variant as a Cause of Developmental Eye Anomalies in an Individual With EncephaloCranioCutaneous Lipomatosis

open access: yesClinical Genetics, EarlyView.
We describe a girl presenting with structural eye anomalies and a constellation of features suggestive of the mosaic RASopathy EncephaloCranioCutaneous Lipomatosis (ECCL). Tissue‐specific investigations identified a mosaic KRAS variant at a mutational hotspot (p.[Ala146Pro]), prompting appropriate tumour surveillance.

Optic nerve coloboma was severe in patients with PAX2 mutations.

open access: yes, 2015
Representative images of coloboma scores 0–4 are shown in panel A. Score 0, normal optic disc; Score 1, optic disc dysplasia with an unusual pattern of the retinal vessels and cilioretinal arteries; Score 2, optic disc pit associated with vascular ...

Bilateral chorioretinal coloboma discovered with ultra-wide field retinal imaging

open access: yesJournal of Optometry, 2012
Uveal coloboma results from incomplete closure of the optic cup fissure. While conducting an evaluation of a new ultra-wide field retinal imaging camera (Optomap), which provides a view of the fundus up to 200° at one time without mydriasis, we ...

RLIM‐associated neurodevelopmental disorders: From clinical spectrum to molecular mechanisms

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
RLIM (RNF12) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase essential for mammalian development. Loss‐of‐function variants cause Tønne–Kalscheuer syndrome, while duplications cause Xq13 duplication syndrome, highlighting RLIM dosage sensitivity. This review summarizes the genetics, clinical features, and molecular mechanisms of RLIM‐associated disorders, integrating ...
