Drusen and the misleading optic disc

Optic disc drusen are acellular calcified deposits occurring in small optic discs. They have a prevalence of up to approximately 2% and are bilateral in 75% of cases. Their size and fundosc pic visibility increase with age, and they are commonly responsible for the misdiagnosis of papilloedema by the unwary.

Progression from Anomalous Optic Discs to Visible Optic Disc Drusen

At age 5, a patient underwent fundus photography that disclosed elevated optic discs without drusen. A head computed tomography did not show optic nerve calcification. At age 9, no disc drusen were evident by ophthalmoscopy, but a CT now showed optic nerve calcification.

Optic disc drusen (ODD) are benign calcified deposits, which are located at the head of the optic disc. Most ODD patients are asymptomatic. Ocular complications, related to ODD, are considered rare.
