Optical bistability on a silicon chip

Optics Letters, 2004
We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, optical bistability on a highly integrated silicon device, using a 5-microm-radius ring resonator. The strong light-confinement nature of the resonator induces nonlinear optical response with low pump power.

Optical bistability in BDN dye

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1983
We report optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot filled with BDN saturable absorbing dye occurring due to an intensity-dependent phase shift. A four-level model is used to show that the phase shift arises from nonresonant dispersion due to an excited metastable state which is excited in the process of saturable absorption. Preliminary experiments confirm

Optical bistability with surface plasmons

Optics Letters, 1981
We theoretically examine bistable operation in reflection with simultaneous excitation of the surface-plasmon mode at the interface with a nonlinear Kerr medium. Bistability may occur for an incident power an order of magnitude below that reported previously for a grazing-incidence geometry.

Mirrorless optical bistability condition

Physical Review A, 1989
The mirrorless optical bistability problem is approached by analyzing the local relationship between the population inversion and the intensity of the laser excitation source. The active mechanism leading to bistability is the nonlinear Lorentz shift that changes sign along with the population inversion. Homogeneous broadening works against bistability.

Nonlinear control in optical bistability

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1985
We study the influence of a small periodic modulation of the input field amplitude in dispersive optical bistability. When the system is initially near one of the two limit points in a stable state, the addition of a small periodic modulation may either stabilize or destabilize the system.

Optical switching and bistability in a degenerated two-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field.

Applied Optics, 2019
We propose a simple system for both optical switching and bistability based on degenerated two-level atoms placed in a ring cavity and an external magnetic field.

Optical Bistability and the Digital Optical Computer

Topical Meeting on Optical Bistability (OB3), 1985
Electrons are well suited for switching operations as they occur in a logic processor. But electrons are not so easy to guide from one point to another point. On that score, photons are more suitable. Recently, photons became amendable also for logic processing. Hence, the stage is set for the development of an all-optical digital computer.
