Optical-to-Radio Continua in Solar Flares

Spectral continua observed during solar flares may contain information about both thermal and non-thermal heating mechanisms. Using two semi-empirical flare models F2 and FLA, we synthesize the thermal continua from optical to mm–radio domains and compare their intensities with quiet-Sun values computed from a recent model C7.

A Search for Optical Flares in Chromospherically Active Stars

We have surveyed four years of archival UBV photometry of 69 chromospherically active stars obtained with the Phoenix-10 automatic photoelectric telescope in search of optical flares on these stars. We demonstrate taht, while flares can be detected in these data, the number of events observed on evolved stars remains very small.
