A Search for Minute-timescale Flares from the Transient AT 2024wpp

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The AT 2018cow-like fast blue optical transient AT 2022tsd showed a large number of a few-minute-duration, high-luminosity (∼10 ^43 erg s ^−1 ) flares. We present an intensive search for such flares from another 18cow-like event, AT 2024wpp. We have used

VLBI observations of flared optical quasar CGRaBS J0809+5341 [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 2016
Abstract A bright optical flare was detected in the high-redshift (z = 2.133) quasar CGRaBS J0809+5341 on 2014 April 13. The absolute magnitude of the object reached −30.0 during the flare, making it the brightest one (in flaring stage) among all known quasars so far.

The Double Tidal Disruption Event AT 2022dbl Implies that at Least Some “Standard” Optical Tidal Disruption Events Are Partial Disruptions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Flares produced following the tidal disruption of stars by supermassive black holes can reveal the properties of the otherwise dormant majority of black holes and the physics of accretion.

Optical Polarimetric and Multiwavelength Flaring Activity of Blazar 3C 279 [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2019
Abstract An exhaustive analysis of 9 yr optical R-band photopolarimetric data of the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 from 2008 February 27 to 2017 May 25 is presented, along with multiwavelength observing campaigns performed during the flaring activity exhibited in 2009 February/March, 2011 June, 2014 March/April, 2015 June, and 2017 ...

Multiwavelength polarization observations of the γ-ray bright quasar PKS 0420-014

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2013
We analyze total and polarized intensity images of the quasar PKS 0420-014 obtained monthly with the VLBA at 43 GHz during 2008–2012 along with γ-ray data provided by the Fermi Large Area Telescope and multi-color photometric and polarimetric ...

Stellar flares

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Solar Physics
Magnetic storms on stars manifest as remarkable, randomly occurring changes of the luminosity over durations that are tiny in comparison to the normal evolution of stars.

Fine-Grained Monitoring of Gas Flaring in Persian Gulf Countries With Multispectral SDGSAT-1 Nighttime Imagery

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Gas flaring is a major source of greenhouse gas and a waste of nonrenewable resources. Remote sensing is suggested to be a capable proxy to provide independent, reliable, and regular observations on global gas flaring.

Brightest Gamma-Ray-burst Flare Observed in GRB 221009A: Bridging the Last Gap between the Prompt Emission and Flare in Gamma-Ray Bursts

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Flares are usually observed during the afterglow phases of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the soft-X-ray, optical, and radio bands—but rarely in the gamma-ray band.

Statistical Study of the Timing of the Appearance of Hα Postflare Loops: Simple Scaling Law Based on Radiative Cooling

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Recent Sun-as-a-star studies have shown that postflare loops can manifest as a secondary peak in the H α light curve, suggesting that stellar postflare loops are detectable.

A Seven-day Multiwavelength Flare Campaign on AU Mic. III. Quiescent and Flaring Properties of the X-Ray Spectra and Chromospheric Lines

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the X-ray quiescent and flaring properties from a unique, 7 days multiwavelength observing campaign on the M1 flare star AU Mic. Combining the XMM-Newton X-ray spectra with the chromospheric line and broadband near-UV (NUV) and optical ...
