The speed and complexity of integrated circuits are increasing rapidly as integrated circuit technology advances from very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits to ultra-large-scale integrated (ULSI) circuits. As the number of devices per chip, the number of chips per board, the modulation speed, and the degree of integration continue to increase ...

Diffractive–reflective optical interconnects
Applied Optics, 1988We have demonstrated the feasibility of diffractive-reflective optical interconnects. These interconnects consist of a sandwich of a holographic plane and a reflective plane. Various possibilities like beam relaying, connection switching, and broadcasting are discussed.

Free-space optical interconnection scheme
Applied Optics, 1989One of the limiting factors in the design of large scale digital systems is communication [1]. The use of conventional wiring for high speed communication entails high energy dissipation, crosstalk, ground loops and low interconnect density due to physical size constraints.

Optical fiber interconnections
1996 Proceedings 46th Electronic Components and Technology Conference, 2002A Z-axis assembly process was described for producing optical fiber based connectorized optical interconnection circuits (COICs). The required split connectors were injection molded from heavily filled PPS material. Reproducible mechanized fiber stripping as part of the Z-axis assembly process was incorporated and successfully tested with good results.

Integrated optical interconnections
IEEE Circuits and Devices Magazine, 1992The use of optical interconnections between processors, boards, chips, and gates in electronic digital systems to overcome the current performance limitations is described. The advantages of optical interconnections in relation to the interconnection distance, the data capacity, and the interconnection functions are presented.

Holographic optical interconnections
First International Workshop on Massively Parallel Processing Using Optical Interconnections, 2002Introduces a new type of planar optical interconnect, the transverse holographic waveguides. With this type of interconnect, one dimensional, input light distribution is converted into a one dimensional output light distribution via holographic patterning along the direction of the optical wave propagation. >

Alignability of optical interconnects
Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1989A theory for analyzing the alignability, the degree of difficulty of aligning the devices and light beams, of a given optical interconnection system is developed. From various experiments it has been found that the alignment of a basic optical interconnect consisting of one beam and one device is a random process, N(0,σ).

We have demonstrated PCIe optical connections over fiber up to 300m distances. Due to their high bandwidth, low weight, immunity to EMI interference, and ruggedness of the electrical connector interface, PCIe Active Optical Cables present many advantages over copper cables in avionics applications.

AbstractA novel photonic interconnect architecture is proposed which can provide extremely high dimensionality. The proposed architecture, which resembles a collapsed network, avoids the difficulties associated with the use of optical crosspoints. This is accomplished by providing a dedicated path for all input- and output-port connections on a common ...
