Single-beam optical gradient force traps created by focusing helical modes of light are known as optical vortices. Modulating the helical pitch of such a mode's wave front yields a new class of optical traps whose dynamically reconfigurable intensity distributions provide new opportunities for controlling motion in mesoscopic systems. An implementation

Light pulses from a mode-locked He-Ne laser have been modulated by a LiTaO(3) electrooptic crystal mounted on a thin film substrate. The crystal was driven by pulses from a GaAs Gunn effect diode. Amplitude modulation of 20% has been achieved at 2 GHz for a single pass through the modulator.

The development of integrated silicon photonic circuits has recently been driven by the Internet and the push for high bandwidth as well as the need to reduce power dissipation induced by high data-rate signal transmission. To reach these goals, efficient passive and active silicon photonic devices, including waveguide, modulators, photodetectors, etc.

Advanced optical modulation formats
Proceedings of the IEEE, 2006Fiber-optic communication systems form the high-capacity transport infrastructure that enables global broadband data services and advanced Internet applications. The desire for higher per-fiber transport capacities and, at the same time, the drive for lower costs per end-to-end transmitted information bit has led to optically routed networks with high ...

Achromatic optical compensator–modulator
Applied Optics, 1989An optical compensator is described which is achromatized in a broad spectral range. It consists of two pairs of birefringent plates of different materials under oblique incidence rotated around the normal to the plates. The phase shift is achromatized by adjusting the plate thicknesses. An electrooptic modulator based on this design is also described.

Deformable grating optical modulator
Optics Letters, 1992A new type of light modulator, the deformable grating modulator, based on electrically controlling the amplitude of a micromachined phase grating is described. Mechanical motion of one quarter of a wavelength is sufficient for switching in this device.

Absorbance-modulation optical lithography
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2006We describe a new mode of optical lithography called absorbance-modulation optical lithography (AMOL) in which a thin film of photochromic material is placed on top of a conventional photoresist and illuminated simultaneously by a focal spot of wavelength lambda1 and a ring-shaped illumination of wavelength lambda2.
