High Speed Silicon optical modulators

Optoelectronic Materials and Devices, 2011
In this paper we describe two silicon based optical modulators that have been fabricated as part of two projects in which the Surrey group is involved, the “UK Silicon Photonics project” funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the European “HELIOS” project funded by the European Union. The modulators exploit the

Modulators for Optical Communications

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1970
This paper reviews the field of high-speed small-aperture modulators for applications in optical communications, with emphasis on electrooptic modulation. The capabilities and limitations of electrooptic modulators are discussed based on a review of the physical origin of the electrooptic effect.

Optical interconnection of optical modules

SPIE Proceedings, 1990
ABSTRACT' The purpose of this paper is to explore the use and misuse of nonlinear optics as a way of connecting complex optical modules. For applications, such as neural networks, that need large numbers of interconnections and have numerous stages, the optical to optical interconnect is attractive.

Excited state optical modulator

Applied Optics, 1986
It is shown that if two light beams intersect in a medium containing the appropriate molecule, one beam can modulate the other by making use of the differences in the absorption spectra of the ground and excited molecular states. This is possible even with the power of semiconductor lasers.

Optical-optical guided-wave modulator

Applied Physics Letters, 1984
An amorphous silicon photovoltaic detector was integrated on the LiNbO3 interferometric waveguide type guided-wave modulator, and guided-wave modulation by an external He-Ne laser light was demonstrated with a time response of 5 μs.

Birefringence modulation in fiber-optic phase modulators

Optics Letters, 1994
We report an unusually large birefringence modulation in fiber-optic phase modulators formed with cylindrical piezoelectric transducers when driven at a few hundred kilohertz. The magnitude of the birefringence modulation is a strong function of modulation frequency.

Optically driven optically addressed spatial light modulator

Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1992
Most optically addressed spatial light modulators (OASLMs) have had the disadvantage of requiring some kind of electrical drive field, along with the optical read and write fields. The preliminary results of research into an optically driven optically addressed spatial light modulator (ODOASLM) employing a polymer as the photoreceptor indicate that the

Optical Modulation

2015
Abstract The use of an electric, magnetic, or stress field to modify the optical properties of a medium is examined. The application of one of these disturbances produces an anisotropy in the medium that requires a tensor description and generates a birefringence.
