Asynchronous Sampling for Optical Performance Monitoring

OFC/NFOEC 2007 - 2007 Conference on Optical Fiber Communication and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2007
We present two novel performance monitoring techniques for optically switched networks, based on asynchronous multi-tap sampling. We show that multiple simultaneous impairments can be separated and quantified by a single monitor.

Convolutional Neural Networks for Optical Performance Monitoring [PDF]

open access: possible2019 IEEE Avionics and Vehicle Fiber-Optics and Photonics Conference (AVFOP), 2019
We demonstrate accurate OSNR estimation using convolutional neural networks based on the constellation image of a QAM signal. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate estimation error within 0.1 dB. Neural network training on simulated and successful testing on experimental data was also demonstrated.

Novel techniques for optical performance monitoring in optical systems

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
In this paper, different kinds of optical performance monitoring (OPM) techniques, in particular the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring and chromatic dispersion (CD) monitoring, are reviewed. Then recent trend of multiple-parameter simultaneous monitoring is examined.

The optical sampling based on semiconductor optical amplifier for optical performance monitoring

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
Progress in optical network has stimulated interest in optical performance monitoring (OPM). Optical sampling technique is believed to be a promising candidate to monitor the physical state of the network. The theoretical model of a monitoring system based on optical sampling in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and software synchronized algorithm ...

Sensitivity issues of optical performance monitoring

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2002
Optical performance monitoring is becoming an important network building block as the system becomes increasingly sophisticated and the network span becomes larger and larger. The general requirement for the optical performance monitor from the noise perspective is derived from the fundamental considerations of detector noises.
