Phase-Combining Unit for Aliasing Suppression in Optical Phased Array
Proceedings of the 2022 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Pacific Rim, 2022We proposed a phase-combining unit to suppress the aliasing effect in OPA devices. It can control 2N-1 emitters with N phase shifters. Theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental results have been completed and presented.

Integrated Optical Phased Arrays for on-Chip Communication
2023 23rd International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2023The realization of efficient interconnections is one of the important challenges either in long-haul optical communications or in short-reach optical interconnects. As an example, in chip multiprocessors, the efficient interconnection of cores is becoming a major challenge and it is necessary to avoid communication bottleneck and to meet high bandwidth,

Phased array of phased arrays for free space optical communications
2003 IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.03TH8652), 2004An aperture composed of multiple small apertures has several advantages over a large continuous aperture when practical issues are included in the analysis. For example, a single bullet can easily produce a catastrophic failure of the laser communication link if all the optical gain for the transmitter (or receiver) is derived from a single large ...

Compact 2D serpentine optical phased array
Applied Optics, 2021We present a two-dimensional (2D) Si photonics optical phased array (OPA) using a serpentine design which eliminates the long directional couplers used in many 2D OPA designs. It significantly reduces the distance between the antenna benefitting far-field sidelobe reduction while maintaining high optical power use ...

Optically Interconnected Phased Arrays
SPIE Proceedings, 1988Phased-array antennas are required for many future NASA missions. They will provide agile electronic beam forming for communications and tracking in the range of 1 to 100 GHz. Such phased arrays are expected to use several hundred GaAs monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) as transmitting and receiving elements.

Integrated optical phased arrays for optical trapping
Adaptive Optics and Wavefront Control for Biological Systems VII, 2021In this paper we propose and simulate a design for an optical phased array that can produces spot sizes small enough to be used in optical trapping processes in a micro-scale. Furthermore we attempt to combat the large grating lobes that are characteristic of optical phased arrays via an optimized non-uniform spacing profile of emitter elements.

Fast beam steering with an optical phased array
Optics Letters, 2020Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are devices that use the coherence of light to control the interference pattern in the far field, which enables them to steer a laser beam with no moving parts. As such, OPAs have potential applications in laser communications, target acquisition and tracking, metrology, and directed energy.

Nanodipoles for an optical phased array
Journal of Russian Laser Research, 2007Two realizations of an optical electric dipole emitter are considered in the application to a dipole optical phased array project. Realization 1 is a dielectric disc in which a leaky wave of the E0m0 type is excited. Realization 2 is a piece of nanowire of a well-reflecting metal (Ag) coated with a dielectric layer (ZnO).

An optical phased array for lasers
Proceedings of International Symposium on Phased Array Systems and Technology, 2002High-performance, optical phased arrays for electronic control of laser beams have recently been demonstrated. The optical aperture is lithographically fabricated to form a unity-fill-factor array of liquid-crystal-based optical phase shifters. The liquid-crystal phase shifters can be fabricated smaller than a wavelength of light, with spacings equally

Optical Phased Array with Electromechanical Phase Shifters
Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS, 2019We propose a chip-scale optical phased array (OPA) enabling steering along two orthogonal angles using integrated electromechanical optical phase shifters. Initial experimental results from fabricated silicon nitride OPAs are presented.
