Active optical compensation of low-quality optical system aberrations

Optics Letters, 2006
We describe a method for the correction of slowly varying wavefront aberrations of low-quality telescope mirrors by using a DM in an active optical compensation system. Our goal is to reduce the surface wavefront error of low-cost multimeter-diameter mirrors from approximately 10 waves peak-to-valley (P-V), at a 1 microm wavelength, to approximately 1 ...

Optical quality control

Physics Bulletin, 1985
Since the time of Galileo, many tasks performed in optical polishing workshops have remained essentially unaltered. Grinding and polishing optical components to their final shape is still a laborious task.

Optical quality of intraocular lenses

Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 1992
The ANSI Z80.7 standard for intraocular lens quality is being updated. This paper identifies areas that require revision and suggests that a clear distinction between the lens design and the quality control test methods be made. The standard monofocal lens design consists of two spherical surfaces, and lens power can be specified by the thick lens ...

Gasdynamic lightguide with high optical quality

Applied Optics, 1985
A region capable of guiding light can be created by the refractive-index gradients in a radial flow nozzle. An earlier such lightguide had been found to have poor optical quality. A new lightguide has been built and tested. Reasonably good agreement was found between the calculated and observed shapes of the lightguiding regions.

Thermo-optic quality assessment of doped optical ceramics

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
The use of optical quality ceramics for laser applications is expanding, and with this expansion there is an increasing need for diagnostics to assess the quality of these materials. Ceramic material with flaws and contaminants yields significantly less efficient performance as laser gain media and can generate excessive amounts of waste heat.

Optical quality of the cat eye

Vision Research, 1971
Abstract The modulation transfer function (MTF) of the cat's eye was measured. The MTF was determined by projecting square-wave-gratings of differing widths onto the retina, photographing the images of these gratings with a special fundus-camera, and making a photometric recording of the film.

Optical Quality Metrics

2015
In the previous chapter, diffraction and aberration theory was developed to relate the shape of the wavefront in the exit pupil to the irradiance pattern formed in the image plane. Mathematical representation of the complex wavefront surface fully describes its shape but at the same time obscures whether the performance of the optical system is good or

Optical quality of InGaAsN/GaAs

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
Bulk layers of GaAsN and InGaAsN and GaAs/InGaAsN/GaAs quantum wells with nitrogen concentration of about 1% have been grown by bas source molecular beam epitaxy with a radio frequency discharge N source. The material has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, secondary ion mass spectrometry, photoluminescence (PL) and Hall effect with the intention ...

Measuring Optical Quality

2018
Light intensity is measured in nits. Transmissivity is the measure of how many nits pass through an area of transparent material. Haze is a measure of how much of the light passing through the material diverges from its original path by more than 2.5°. Clarity is a measure of much diverges by less than 2.5°.

Intraocular lens optical quality testing

Proceedings of the Fifteenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference, 2003
The possibility that problems relating to the optical quality of manufactured intraocular lenses (IOLs) may require regulatory attention is addressed. Based on the American National Standard for Ophthalmics-Intraocular Lenses-Optical and Physical Requirements (ANSI Standard Z80.7-1984), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will soon be ready for ...
