Space-division multiplexing for fiber-wireless communications

open access: yes, 2018
We envision the application of optical Space-division Multiplexing (SDM) to the next generation fiber-wireless communications as a firm candidate to increase the end user capacity and provide adaptive radiofrequency-photonic interfaces.

Self-sustained picosecond pulse generation in a GaAlAs laser at an electrically tunable repetition rate by optoelectronic feedback [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
We demonstrate that applying optoelectronic feedback to a high-speed, self-pulsing semiconductor laser is an effective and practical means of generating picosecond optical pulses (~10–20 ps) at a very high repetition rate, between 1 to 5 GHz, which can ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Optical Logic Gates Excited by a Gauss Vortex Interference Beam Based on Spatial Self-Phase Modulation in 2D MoS2

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
Vortex beams with optical orbital angular momentum have broad prospects in future high-speed and large-capacity optical communication. In this investigation of materials science, we found that low-dimensional materials have feasibility and reliability in

Pump-probe detuning dependence of four-wave mixing pulse in an SOA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Four-wave mixing (FWM) between 2-ps pulses in a multiquantum-well semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is presented. The conjugate pulses are fully characterized using the frequency-resolved optical gating technique.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Extraction and Verification of Seismic Vibration Metrics via Laser Remote Sensing Utilizing Wavefront Sensors

open access: yesSensors
Seismic wave analysis is crucial for identifying subsurface formations and geological hazards. In this study, a seismic wave laser remote sensing system based on a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor was established by exploiting its high spatial resolution,

Ultrafast all-optical signal processing how and why? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Demand for fast and secure high capacity networks is growing. Currently offered solutions are hampered by the reappearance of electronic bottleneck. It is believed that to fully utilize transmission bandwidth of optical networks ultrafast all-optical ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
