Highly Dispersive Optical Solitons with Four Forms of Self-Phase Modulation
This paper implements the enhanced Kudryashov approach to retrieve highly dispersive optical solitons and study it with four nonlinear forms. These are the power law, generalized quadratic-cubic law, triple-power law, and the generalized non-local law ...

Quantum decay of an optical soliton
Optical solitons are known to be classically stable objects which are robust to perturbations. In this work, we show that due to quantum mechanical effects, an optical soliton that is initially in a classical soliton coherent state will shed photons into the continuum and hence decay.

Structural Colors from Modulated Topological Defects in Molecular Smectic Liquid Crystals
Rather than using dyes and pigments, nature produces the colors of some butterflies and beetles through optical interference phenomena. This study describes an original biomimetic strategy exploiting the spontaneous formation of modulated linear defects in thin films of 8CB, a common molecular liquid crystal.

Control of Light by Topological Solitons in Soft Chiral Birefringent Media
In practically all branches of physics, different types of solitons, with a number of them enjoying topological protection, are found. Here we explore how one- and two-dimensional topological solitons formed by spatially localized continuous ...

We showed recently [1] that a single soliton solution of the highly-nonlinear Schrödinger equation becomes multi-stable for a certain class of nonlinearities. This implies that more than one amplitude profile and propagation constant of a single soliton may exist for the same total power carried by the soliton.

An electro‐templating strategy directs the relaxation of cholesteric finger loops into discrete concentric rings whose geometry is electrically programmed. The photopolymerized structures retain the topological defect pattern and, upon heating, show reversible, castle‐like surface modulation.

Mathematical frontiers in optical solitons [PDF]
Solitons are localized concentrations of field energy, resulting from a balance of dispersive and nonlinear effects. They are ubiquitous in the natural sciences. In recent years optical solitons have arisen in new and exciting contexts that differ in many ways from the original context of coherent propagation in a uniform medium.

Advancing Energy Materials by In Situ Atomic Scale Methods
Progress in in situ atomic scale methods leads to an improved understanding of new and advanced energy materials, where a local understanding of complex, inhomogeneous systems or interfaces down to the atomic scale and quantum level is required. Topics from photovoltaics, dissipation losses, phase transitions, and chemical energy conversion are ...
