Photonic crystal chips for optical interconnects and quantum information processing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We have recently demonstrated a number of functional photonic crystals devices and circuits, including an ultrafast, room temperature, low threshold, nanocavity laser with the direct modulation speed approaching 1 THz, an all-optical switch controlled ...

Six-port optical switch for cluster-mesh photonic network-on-chip

open access: yes, 2018
Photonic network-on-chip for high-performance multi-core processors has attracted substantial interest in recent years as it offers a systematic method to meet the demand of large bandwidth, low latency and low power dissipation.

All-Optical Switch Based on a Fiber-Chip-Fiber Opto-Mechanical System With Ultrahigh Extinction Ratio

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical switch based on a fiber-chip-fiber opto-mechanical system driven by thermal radiation. The two optical fibers are both designed as movable cantilever structures with a free-hanging length.

Nonlinear optical switching matrix

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2003
We show that nonlinear directional couplers with variable coupling coefficients can be used to compose a special kind of switching matrix. The switching matrix can be controlled by the signal itself or by a strong pump. Light routing is realized by adjustment of the power of the signal or the pump.

Broadband optical switch based on liquid crystal dynamic scattering.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2016
This work demonstrates a novel broadband optical switch, based on dynamic-scattering effect in liquid crystals (LCs). Dynamic-scattering-mode technology was developed for display applications over four decades ago, but was displaced in favor of the ...

Controlling the phase of a light beam with a single molecule

open access: yes, 2011
We employ heterodyne interferometry to investigate the effect of a single organic molecule on the phase of a propagating laser beam. We report on the first phase-contrast images of individual molecules and demonstrate a single-molecule electro-optical ...

Coexistence of Josephson oscillations and novel self-trapping regime in optical waveguide arrays [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Considering the coherent nonlinear dynamics between two weakly linked optical waveguide arrays, we find the first example of coexistence of Josephson oscillations with a novel self-trapping regime.

Equivalent random analysis of a buffered optical switch with general interarrival times [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We propose an approximate analytic model of an optical switch with fibre delay lines and wavelength converters by employing Equivalent Random Theory. General arrival traffic is modelled by means of Gamma-distributed interarrival times.

Fast-response and high-efficiency optical switch based on dual-frequency liquid crystal polarization grating

open access: yes, 2016
A dual-frequency liquid crystal polarization grating is fabricated by photoalignment and demonstrated as an optical switch. A high diffraction efficiency up to 95% is obtained for a single first order with circular incident polarization.
