Real-Time Optical Frequency-Domain Reflectometry

2007 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), 2007
In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an ultrafast optical frequency domain reflectometry system based on real-time optical Fourier-transformation. Interferograms are captured over 50 ns time windows at a 20 MHz repetition rate with a 70 mum depth resolution.

Interferometric optical time-domain reflectometry for distributed optical-fiber sensing

Applied Optics, 1998
The technique of optical time-domain reflectometry is analyzed to determine the effect of an optical phase modulation on light backscattered in an optical fiber. It is shown that the spatial distribution along the fiber of an external phase modulation can be measured with a spatial resolution close to that of optical time-domain reflectometry.

Optical time-domain reflectometry of bent plastic optical fibers

Applied Optics, 2001
Optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) signals of step-index plastic optical fibers (POF's) and graded-index POF's were measured with a laser diode and an avalanche photodiode. When bent step-index and graded-index POF's were used, the OTDR signal behavior differed.

Coded optical time domain reflectometry: principle and applications

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
In this paper, we will briefly outline our contributions for the physical realization of coded OTDR, along with its principles and also highlight recent key results related with its applications. For the communication network application, we report a multi-port / multi-wavelength, high-speed supervisory system for the in-service monitoring of a ...

Continuous chirped-wave phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry

Optics Letters, 2021
This Letter proposes a novel phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry ( Φ -OTDR) with continuous chirped-wave (CCW), which can make full use of both time and frequency domain resources. The principle and benefits of CCW Φ -OTDR are elaborated.

Optical Time Domain Reflectometry Fiber Studies.

1982
Abstract : The wideband frequency capability of optical fibers, the development of very low loss optical fibers (1 dB/km) and the rapid development of associated optical circuit elements are expected to result in widespread use of optical fiber communication systems in the near future.

Optical time domain reflectometry on optical amplifier systems

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1989
The use of optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) on long-span fiber transmission systems containing in-line optical amplifiers is discussed. Having identified the specific requirements for OTDR equipment, measurements were carried out on systems of up to 300 km in length, containing three semiconductor laser amplifiers.

Ultrahigh Resolution Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry

SPIE Proceedings, 1989
There is an increasing need for an OTDR system with a centimeter scale spatial resolution capability (ie the capability of resolving signals from two target features with separation ~l cm) in short haul fiber networks and sensor systems. In order to achieve centimeter scale spatial resolution along a fiber, it is necessary to employ optical sources and

Distributed fiber strain and vibration sensor based on Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry and polarization optical time-domain reflectometry

Optics Letters, 2013
A distributed fiber strain and vibration sensor which effectively combines Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry and polarization optical time-domain reflectometry is proposed. Two reference beams with orthogonal polarization states are, respectively, used to perform the measurement.

Recent Advances In Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

SPIE Proceedings, 1985
The sensitivity and performance of single-mode Optical Time Domain Reflectometers has to date been insufficient to fully satisfy the requirements of the long haul telecommunications industry. Three approaches to the problem have been considered, namely conventional direct detection, long wavelength photon counting and coherent detection.
