Optical Traps for Dark Excitons
Physical Review Letters, 2011We propose a mechanism for optical trapping of dark excitons by linearly polarized unabsorbed standing waves, with a potential depth of the order of a few meV. Since this trapping, based on carrier exchanges with virtual excitons coupled to unabsorbed photons, equally acts on bright and dark states, Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons--which occurs ...

Calibration of optically trapped nanotools
Nanotechnology, 2010Holographically trapped nanotools can be used in a novel form of force microscopy. By measuring the displacement of the tool in the optical traps, the contact force experienced by the probe can be inferred. In the following paper we experimentally demonstrate the calibration of such a device and show that its behaviour is independent of small changes ...

Optical Trapping and Unfolding of RNA
2011Optical tweezers have proven a useful tool for exploring the structure and function of individual molecules, such as proteins, DNA, and RNA. The ability to unfold and refold biological molecules has provided novel insights that complement and go beyond traditional biochemical and structural approaches.

Optical vortex trapping of particles
Optics Letters, 1996We demonstrate three-dimensional trapping of low-index particles (20-microm-diameter hollow glass spheres in water) by using a single, strongly focused, stationary dark optical vortex laser beam. The holographically generated vortex, which is similar to a TEM(01)* mode beam, was also used to trap and form ring patterns of high-index particles.

Optical traps with geometric aberrations
Applied Optics, 2006We assess the influence of geometric aberrations on the in-plane performance of optical traps by studying the dynamics of trapped colloidal spheres in deliberately distorted holographic optical tweezers. The lateral stiffness of the traps turns out to be insensitive to moderate amounts of coma, astigmatism, and spherical aberration.

Optical trapping for analytical biotechnology
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2012We describe the exciting advances of using optical trapping in the field of analytical biotechnology. This technique has opened up opportunities to manipulate biological particles at the single cell or even at subcellular levels which has allowed an insight into the physical and chemical mechanisms of many biological processes.
