Numerical studies of vortices and dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensates support intriguing macroscopic excitations in the form of quantized vortices and dark solitons. In this thesis we present extensive quantitative studies of the dynamics of these phenomena in the limit of zero ...

Tuning vector vortex in spatially coherent supercontinuum multicolored optical beam using q-plate

open access: yes, 2014
Tuning vector vortex in spatially coherent multicolored beam is studied. A wavelength filter based on the tunable modal properties of light is experimentally demonstrated, and the polarization topology of optical beam profile is mapped.

Photothermal‐Activated Antibacterial Amyloid‐Polyphenol‐Iron Hydrogels for Synergistic Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We report a thermally triggered supramolecular hydrogel (LTFe) formed by Fe3+ and tannic acid on lysozyme amyloid fibrils. Fe3+ enables rapid gelation and photothermal transduction with an efficiency of 88.56%. The LTFe hydrogel exhibits excellent biocompatibility, potent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S.

Azimuthally dependent absorption and gain in an atomic system with spontaneously generated coherence controlled by an optical vortex field

open access: yesScientific Reports
This paper examines spatially dependent absorption and gain of a weak probe field in a 3-level atomic $$\Lambda$$ -system with spontaneously generated coherence and incoherent pump, using an optical vortex beam as the control field.

Vortex structures in atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

open access: yes, 2013
This thesis is concerned with the structure and stability of vortices in spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) in rotating, optical traps. We numerically study these vortex structures using a classical mean-field theory which allows atomic ...

A Systematic Study of GelMA‐Carbopol Bioinks for High‐Fidelity Extrusion 3D Bioprinting at Physiological Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Gonzalez Martinez and collaborators develop a strategy to formulate high performance GelMA‐based bioinks with low solids contents. The resulting bioinks enable 3D bioprinting at 37 °C of high‐fidelity structures with tunable mechanical properties that support high cell viability and function.

Probing the modal characteristics of novel beam shapes

open access: yes, 2013
In this thesis, an investigation into the modal characteristics of novel beam shapes is presented. Sculpting the phase profile of a Gaussian beam can result in the generation of a beam with unique properties.

Orbital angular momentum in noncollinear second-harmonic generation by off-axis vortex beams

open access: yes, 2011
We experimentally study the behavior of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a noncollinear second-harmonic generation process. The experiment is performed by using a Type I BBO crystal under phase-matching conditions with femtosecond pumping ...

Plasmonic Enhancement of Fluorescence and Protein Dynamics in Living Mammalian Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates plasmonic enhancement of the function of fluorescent voltage sensing proteins (genetically encoded voltage indicators, (GEVIs), QuasAr6) in live mammalian cells. Coupling to plasmonic nanoparticles does not just increase fluorescence, but influences the protein photocycle, creating a hybrid sensor with its response speed to ...
