We describe a low-cost fiber optic sensor for measuring photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in turbulent flow. Existing technology was combined in a novel way for probe development addressing the need for a small but durable instrument for use in flowing water. Optically driven optically addressed spatial light modulator
Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1992Most optically addressed spatial light modulators (OASLMs) have had the disadvantage of requiring some kind of electrical drive field, along with the optical read and write fields. The preliminary results of research into an optically driven optically addressed spatial light modulator (ODOASLM) employing a polymer as the photoreceptor indicate that the

Controlling Light with Light: Optical Bistability and Optical Modulation
1979A simple GaAs etalon has been used to observe optical bistability, pulse shaping, and modulation of one light beam by another. Such devices may lead to all-optical, high-speed computation and communication; all-optical signal processing may be appropriate with the advent of low-loss, high bit-rate optical transmission systems.

Optical tweezers: a light touch
Journal of Microscopy, 2012SummaryOptical tweezers use focused laser light to manipulate microscopic particles. We discuss the underlying physics of the technique in terms of a gradient force exerted by the light on the particles. The versatility of optical tweezers is highlighted, in particular, we explain how spatial light modulators and various imaging methods have greatly ...

Light-induced terahertz optical activity
Optics Letters, 2009We propose and demonstrate a simple method to induce optical activity in the terahertz (THz) region using photoexcited carriers in a semiconductor substrate with metal two-dimensional chiral masks, which does not show optical activity without photoexcitation.

Light with enhanced optical chirality
Optics Letters, 2012Tang and Cohen [Phys. Rev. Lett.104, 163901 (2010)] recently demonstrated a scheme to enhance the chiral response of molecules, which relies on the use of circularly polarized light in a standing wave configuration. Here we show a new type of light that possesses orbital angular momentum and enhanced chiral response.

Light scattering in optical waveguides
Applied Optics, 1978The coupling of scattered radiation from Raman-active core and cladding regions to the waveguide normal modes is analyzed by treating the scattered light as a classical incoherent effective source. Numerical results are presented for the limiting cases of single-mode or highly multimode excitation of the fiber.

Light Scattering in Optical Glass*
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1948Raman spectra of two optical glasses (a borosilicate crown and a dense flint glass) have been obtained making use of unpolarized exciting light and also with parallel and perpendicular plane polarized exciting light. The chief characteristics of these spectra are that they consist essentially of continua with broad maxima in the continua.
