Optimal Solvers for PDE-Constrained Optimization [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 2010
Optimization problems with constraints which require the solution of a partial differential equation arise widely in many areas of the sciences and engineering, in particular in problems of design. The solution of such PDE-constrained optimization problems is usually a major computational task.

Constraining continuous topology optimizations to discrete solutions for photonic applications [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Photonic topology optimization is a technique used to find the electric permittivity distribution of a device that optimizes an electromagnetic figure-of-merit. Two common techniques are used: continuous density-based optimizations that optimize a grey-scale permittivity defined over a grid, and discrete level-set optimizations that optimize the shape ...

Oracle-Based Robust Optimization via Online Learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Robust optimization is a common framework in optimization under uncertainty when the problem parameters are not known, but it is rather known that the parameters belong to some given uncertainty set.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Quality and Computation Time in Optimization Problems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Optimization problems are crucial in artificial intelligence. Optimization algorithms are generally used to adjust the performance of artificial intelligence models to minimize the error of mapping inputs to outputs. Current evaluation methods on optimization algorithms generally consider the performance in terms of quality.

Identification of novel small molecule inhibitors of ETS transcription factors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
ETS transcription factors play an essential role in tumourigenesis and are indispensable for sprouting angiogenesis, a hallmark of cancer, which fuels tumour expansion and dissemination. Thus, targeting ETS transcription factor function could represent an effective, multifaceted strategy to block tumour growth. The evolutionarily conserved E‐Twenty‐Six

Optimal Gaps in Optimal Paradigms

open access: yesCatalan Journal of Linguistics, 2005
This article develops a treatment of phonologically motivated gaps in paradigms within Optimal Paradigms Theory (McCarthy 2001). The gaps are instances of absolute ungrammaticality, i.e. situations in which there is no output for a given input. In the approach developed here, gaps arise when phonological markedness constraints outrank constraints ...
