Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Theoretical Analysis and Optimum Design of High Speed Air Film Thrust Bearings

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2007
Hydrodynamic air film thrust bearings are widely used for very high speed, lightly loaded rotating machinery such as gas expander, compressor, gyroscope and business machines, etc. In the design of hydrodynamic air film thrust bearings, it is of cardinal

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The Usage of the Harmony Search Algorithm for the Optimal Design Problem of Reinforced Concrete Retaining Walls

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
In this paper, the Harmony Search (HS) algorithm is utilized to perform single and multivariate parametric studies to acquire the optimization of both size and cost of reinforced concrete (RC) retaining walls embedded in pure frictional soils.

Optimum Design of LPCVD Reactors [PDF]

open access: yesLe Journal de Physique IV, 1995
A general mathematical model for the description of heat transfer and mass transport processes in a hotwall multiple-wafer horizontal tube LPCVD reactor is developed. Investigations on the influence of the geometric characteristics of the reactor system on the thickness uniformity of the layers and on the economically expedient performance of the ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Improvement of Slippage and Wrinkling of Transporting Webs Using Micro-Grooved Rollers

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2010
We describe an entirely new method of improving the slippage between web and roller. First, the concept of a micro-grooved roller is introduced, and then a theoretical model for estimating the slip onset velocity under the transport of web by the micro ...

Optimum design of SRC composite beams [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal for Simulation and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization, 2008
Based on experimental study of bond-slip behaviours between steel shape and concrete, an optimal design scheme of single objective and discrete variables is proposed to design steel reinforced concrete (SRC) frame beams.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
