Single mode fiber variable optical attenuator based on a ferrofluid shutter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a single-mode fiber variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on a ferrofluid shutter actuated by a magnetic field created by a low voltage electromagnet.

Optofluidic microchannels in aerogel [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2011
We report optofluidic waveguides made by filling microchannels in aerogel with water. The aerogel cladding is a nanoporous material with an extremely low refractive index of ~1.05, giving a large index step from the water core. Channels were formed by removing embedded optical fibers, which could be nonuniform or multiple.

A Comparative Analysis of Plasmonic and Dielectric Metasurface Sensing Platforms Powered by Bound States in the Continuum

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 9, 29 January 2026.
This work reveals a fundamental trade‐off between plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces for molecular sensing. A clear performance crossover is identified: dielectric metasurfaces excel in air, while plasmonic metasurfaces dominate in lossy solvents. These results establish design rules for infrared metasurface sensors and enable optimized performance ...

Optofluidic Technologies

open access: yes2007 Digest of the IEEE/LEOS Summer Topical Meetings, 2007
Optofluidics refers to adaptive systems that integrate optical and fluidic devices. Micro and nano-fluidics enable novel devices which introduce liquids into optical structures. We discuss recent optofluidic developments, including optically powered vapor pumps. ; © 2007 IEEE. We acknowledge the support of the DARPA Center for Optofluidic Integration,

Optofluidic on-chip tomography [PDF]

open access: yes2011 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2011
The first demonstration of optofluidic tomography is presented. Using partially coherent illumination, holograms of objects are recorded at multiple viewing angles, as they flow through a microfluidic channel placed directly on the top of an opto-electronic sensor array.

Optofluidic integration for microanalysis [PDF]

open access: yesMicrofluidics and Nanofluidics, 2007
This review describes recent research in the application of optical techniques to microfluidic systems for chemical and biochemical analysis. The "lab-on-a-chip" presents great benefits in terms of reagent and sample consumption, speed, precision, and automation of analysis, and thus cost and ease of use, resulting in rapidly escalating adoption of ...
