The mucilage of Opuntia ficus-indica

Abstract The mucilage extracted from the cladodes (modified stems) of Opuntia ficus-indica contains residues of d -galactose, d -xylose, l -arabinose, l -rhamnose, and d -galacturonic acid. Seasonal variation in the sugar composition of the mucilage has been investigated.

Wound healing activity of Opuntia ficus-indica

The methanolic extract of Opuntia ficus-indica stems and its hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fractions were evaluated for their wound healing activity in rats. The extract and less polar fractions showed significant effects.

Propagation of Opuntia ficus-indica by cladode fragments

Agamic propagation of Opuntia ficus-indica by cladode rooting allows a low rate of plant multiplication as compared with other woody plants. One-year-old cladode fragmentation is a possibility for obtaining many small cuttings having homogenous characteristics.
